Island
Smoke Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lovin in the sunshine
Lay out everyday
I grab a hold of sun beams
And pull apart the rays
Can't move your Easter island head
You can't afford to pay
I can tell you how they got there
They carved them where they lay

I know a little scene of me is playin in your head
Sometimes you wish I was here
Sometimes you wish I was dead

I don't ever think of you
Do you not ever think of me too

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of Smoke's song "Island," the lyrics depict a carefree and enjoyable atmosphere. The phrase "Lovin in the sunshine" implies a sense of joy and contentment. The next line, "Lay out everyday," suggests a relaxed lifestyle where one can simply bask in the sun's warmth and light. The following line, "I grab a hold of sun beams and pull apart the rays," could be interpreted metaphorically as the singer trying to grasp and understand the beauty and essence of life.

The lyrics then shift their focus to a different theme in the next few lines. The line "Can't move your Easter island head" implies a sense of being stuck or immobile. This could symbolize an emotional and mental state of being unable to change or move forward. The line "You can't afford to pay" could suggest that the person is confined by their circumstances or unable to escape a certain situation.

The subsequent line, "I can tell you how they got there, they carved them where they lay," introduces a contrasting idea. It may allude to the famous statues on Easter Island, which were crafted from the resources readily available on the island. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the idea that we shape our lives based on our surroundings and the circumstances that we find ourselves in. It suggests that we have the power to create and shape our own experiences.

In the final verse of the song, the lyrics delve into a more personal and introspective tone. The line "I know a little scene of me is playing in your head" suggests that the singer acknowledges that they occupy the thoughts of another person. It could also imply that there is a sense of nostalgia or reminiscence associated with their presence.

The following lines, "Sometimes you wish I was here, sometimes you wish I was dead," convey a sense of complexity and ambivalence in the relationship between the singer and the listener. It suggests that there may be conflicting emotions involved, where the listener sometimes desires the singer's presence while at other times wishes their absence.

The final line, "I don't ever think of you, do you not ever think of me too," reveals a sense of detachment and distance on the part of the singer. It suggests that they do not think of the listener, leaving an open question of whether the listener reciprocates those feelings.

Overall, the lyrics of "Island" by Smoke touch upon themes of embracing the beauty and opportunities in life, feeling stuck or limited by circumstances, the power of shaping our own experiences, and the complexities of personal relationships.
