He has recorded music from many popular video game series, including Zelda, Final Fantasy and Mega Man. His videos have garnered millions of views, and he has left his job giving private music lessons to focus fully on his a cappella videos. When asked about working with more modern tracks, he sided against it, stating that "music for video games today serve a more atmospheric role with less of a focus on memorable melodies", but noting the Elder Scrolls series as an exception.
Weird Fishes
Smooth McGroove Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The bottom of the sea
Your eyes
They turn me
Why should I stay here?
Why should I stay?
I′d be crazy not to follow
Your eyes
They turn me
Turn me into phantoms
I follow to the edge
Of the earth
And fall off
Yeah, everybody leaves
If they get the chance
And this is my chance
I get eaten by the worms
And weird fishes
Picked over by the worms
And weird fishes
Weird fishes
Weird fishes
Yeah, I hit the bottom
Hit the bottom and escape
Escape
I hit the bottom
Hit the bottom and escape
Escape
The lyrics of Smooth McGroove's song Weird Fishes seem to explore the theme of surrendering to someone or something more powerful, and the feeling of being mesmerized and consumed by it. The song starts by describing the deep, uncharted depths of the ocean, where the singer's fascination with someone or something's eyes takes hold. The singer questions why they should stay in this place, yet they can't resist following where this captivating entity leads them. The eyes have turned them into phantoms, ghostlike figures, as they follow to the edge of the earth and fall off, caught in some type of hypnotic trance.
The second part of the song seems to take on a more philosophical tone, commenting on the inevitability of mortality, and how everyone will eventually leave if given the chance. The singer sees this as an opportunity, perhaps to explore or experience something they otherwise couldn't. However, the consequences of this decision become clear, as the singer gets eaten by worms and weird fishes. This line might be interpreted as a metaphor for the harsh reality of death or the potential downside of taking risks. Nevertheless, the song ends on a hopeful note with the singer escaping, hitting the bottom and swimming away.
Overall, Smooth McGroove's Weird Fishes paints a vivid picture of the inner turmoil of surrendering to something powerful. The song seems to suggest that we often don't have control over the things that captivate us, and that we must decide for ourselves whether the potential danger is worth the risk.

Everything about this is perfect. Everything. I'm going to gush, okay? I'm just... I'm just gonna gush.
First, the visualization. Video game? Check. However, as you explained, there's a correlation between you and WoW with this song. You were diving - metaphorically or physically - pretty hard. We are shown just that: coming to the water line and splashing head-first. The song starts with the submergence, and what a view that follows. Beautiful and live colors to start, coming to the slow descent into the tidepool. The footage created could've been used to initially sell the game, that's how well I feel those shots were imposed. Also, I'm not sure if it was completely intentional, but when you sang "weird fishes", a school of fish swam by at that same moment, and that is the kind of thing I appreciate. Excellent cinematography, all around.
The song? Don't even get me stahted. It hits home for a number of your fans (including myself) that you have picked such a powerful piece to cover. Being one of your religious followers, I see two sides of it: the grounded tone of the song versus the heavenly choir of video game music. The highs, the lows, the notes kept along with ones added. You have a spectacular voice, so much so that people want to hear it in place of other music (full soundtracks even), to confirm my belief that the ENTIRE WORLD NEEDS to hear it. I'd easily go broke for you to keep singing, and that is not a joke.
"Over 35 layers in this song" is a statement I'll make with heft as I proceed to show this to every single person in my life. That's Masterpiece-tier. That number is still a little hard for me to comprehend, so I must listen to this song over and over until I find them all. You have done something for yourself in doing this for us, and vice versa. It stands as tall as everything you've created thus far. You can't see it, but right now I'm applauding you. Literally clapping my hands as I type. That's the sort of hypnosis I'm put under as a result of this.
Thank you for existing. I mean it. You are a light in all of our lives.

Sometimes your favorite things come together so perfectly that you think...there's no way this is real. I'm going to wake up, and I'll realize nothing could possibly be as cool as this thing is right now.
