On May 28, 2010, the formation of Soen was announced, its lineup consisting of former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, ex-Death, Testament and Sadus bassist Steve DiGiorgio, Willowtree vocalist Joel Ekelöf and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis. The group's first song, "Fraccions", was released on the band's official website on October 2010. Their first video, for the song "Savia", was posted on their Facebook page on February 2012. Their second video is a moody acoustic version of the song "Ideate". The band's third video is for the song "Delenda".
Drummer Martin Lopez has described Soen's music as "melodic, heavy, intricate and very different than everything else." Their debut, Cognitive, was released in February 2012 to positive critical reception, the members' technical proficiency receiving most praise, though many reviewers noted extreme stylistic similarities to the music of Tool.
Martin Lopez commented on the Tool similarity: "We are inspired by Tool but I consider them not only a band but a genre. Besides that, I really don’t think there’s anything to argue about, we make good music whoever it would remind you of. Some people tend to dislike rather than like and are looking for faults instead of seeing music for what it is, good or bad".
Cognitive was released on Spinefarm records on February 15, 2012. The album was mixed by David Bottrill (Tool, Coheed and Cambria, Silverchair, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse etc.) and mastered by João Carvalho. There's also a bonus track on the Japanese edition called “Writhen”.
As of their fifth album "Imperial", released in 2021, the band members are:
Oleksii "Zlatoyar" Kobel – Bass
Cody Ford – Guitar
Lars Åhlund – Keys, guitar
Joel Ekelöf – Vocals
Martin Lopez – Drums, percussion

Soen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You found your congregation, but your proselyte deserted you
Preaching for atonement and redeeming for the agony
Fickle siren′s song was misleading us in vanity
Desolated wasteland, your kingdom has abandoned you
Praying for the ashes to mediate between us two
Inner admiration of alleviating the unearthly
There will be another storm
We will stay here in eternal rain
All the years, I'll hold on cold
Was it meant always to be here with you?
Twilight in the sky, there's a light in the horizon
The hour′s calling by and the sun is slowly rising
Awaiting intervention, when I silence your liaison, now
Was sooner in the evening, there′s no time for contemplation, now
I wait for the sun
The dawn has begun
There will be another storm
We will stay here in eternal rain
All the years, I'll hold in cold
Was it meant always to be here with you?
All I want is to find a reason, a cause
Something real, something here
A reason, a cause
Always
Always
No more doubts
No more doubts
No more doubts
No more doubts
The lyrics of Soen's song "Vitriol" reflect a sense of disillusionment and betrayal. The opening line, "The coming tribulation, when the dawning will reveal the truth," suggests that a significant event is about to occur, where the reality will be exposed. The following lines, "You found your congregation, but your proselyte deserted you," hint at someone finding a group or community to belong to, but being abandoned or betrayed by a trusted follower.
The next set of lines, "Preaching for atonement and redeeming for the agony, Fickle siren's song was misleading us in vanity," criticize the person's attempts to seek forgiveness and find redemption. The imagery of a "fickle siren's song" implies that their efforts were misguided, leading to vanity and empty promises. The lyrics convey a feeling of disappointment and frustration towards someone who has misled others.
The chorus, "There will be another storm, We will stay here in eternal rain, All the years, I'll hold on cold, Was it meant always to be here with you?" suggests that despite the storms and hardships, the singer chooses to remain in the situation, questioning if it was destined to be this way. The repetition of the line "We will stay here in eternal rain" reflects a sense of endurance and perseverance through difficult times.
The second verse introduces a glimmer of hope as the lyrics describe a "twilight in the sky" and a light on the horizon, symbolizing the possibility of a positive change or intervention. The lines "I wait for the sun, The dawn has begun" express anticipation for a new beginning and the end of darkness.
The song culminates with the repetition of the phrase "No more doubts," emphasizing a desire for clarity and certainty. The repetition reinforces the need to move forward without hesitation or uncertainty.

I've seen very wrong lyrics for this song doing the rounds
Not saying this is 100% right, but it's surely better:
The coming tribulation, when the dawning will reveal the truth
You found your congregation, but your proselyte deserted you
Preaching for atonement and redeeming for the agony
Fickle siren's song was misleading us in vanity
Desolated wasteland, your kingdom has abandoned you

Twilight in the sky, there's a light in the horizon
The hour's calling by and the sun is slowly rising
Awaiting intervention, when I silence your liaison, now
Was sooner in the evening, there's no time for contemplation, no
I wait for the sun
The dawn has begun
There will be another storm
We will stay here in eternal rain
All the years, I'll hold in cold
Was it meant always to be here with you?
All I want is to find a reason, a cause
