Bam-ba-lam

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of SOiL's song "Black Betty" are based on an old American folk song, which was originally sung by African American prisoners to pass the time while working. The song tells the story of Black Betty, a woman from Birmingham, Alabama, who had a child that went wild. The lyrics also suggest that Black Betty herself was a strong and steady woman who could make men "sing" with her shaking.

The song's lyrics are quite simple and repetitive, which makes it catchy and easy to sing along to. The use of "bam-ba-lam" after each line emphasizes the rhythm of the song and creates a sense of urgency and excitement. The repetition of the phrase "Whoa, black Betty" also adds to the overall hypnotic effect of the song.

Ram Jam's version has the perfect tempo so you can understand the singer better, but Soil's version has THE BEST guitar and drum solos. The guitar work here runs circles around Ram Jam in my opinion. The only thing that could top this (and it's not easy to do) is if Van Halen covered this song.

I love how the picture is of the band with AJ Cavalier (current vocalist)... when this song was recorded when Ryan McComb was still in the band... still a great version of the song!

Whitebird527
