In 2007, Knowles began to record music again. Her second studio album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams (2008) deviated from the pop-oriented music of her debut to Motown-inspired sounds from the 60's and 70's. It peaked at number nine on the US Billboard 200 and received positive reviews from critics. She followed this up with the 1980s pop and R&B-inspired EP True (2012) on Terrible Records and her imprint Saint Records. Her third studio album, A Seat at the Table (2016) was released to widespread critical acclaim and became her first number-one album in the United States. The album's lead single, "Cranes in the Sky" won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance. Her fourth studio album, When I Get Home, was released in March 2019 to further critical acclaim.
Knowles was heavily influenced by Motown girl groups and says that her first passion is songwriting. Frequently compared by the media to her sister Beyoncรฉ, Knowles has claimed that they have different aspirations and are musically different. She has been ranked by Billboard as the 100th most successful dance artist of all-time, and in 2017 was honored with the "Impact Award" at Billboard Women in Music. Her other ventures include an endorsement deal with Rimmel London and a line of hip-hop-oriented merchandise for young children.

Boy I know that you feeling things
Calling me constantly
Talking bout you and me
Well even though you never told me
That I was the only one so I did my thang, oh
[B-Section]
Hollars at the fellows maybe
But you can't be mad at me
[Chorus]
So there ain't no need to trip no
Cause I ain't never been your girlfriend
Don't be all up on me baby no way
Gonna do my own thang
Putting that on everything
Don't play me like your girlfriend
Baby no way
[Verse 2]
Did you think I would be waiting around
That's not how I get down
Someone should have told you
And even though it hasn't been a while
Someone else makes me smile
And it feels so good, yeah
[B-Section]
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
Don't you act like you own me
Don't you try to control me
Cause, baby there ain't no way I'm going for that, no
And if you chill you can call me
But for now stay up off me
Cause, baby there ain't no way I'm going for that, no
[Chorus out]
Solange's song Ain't No Way is about a guy who is trying to control her and act like they are in a relationship, when in reality they are not. The first verse sets the tone, with Solange acknowledging that the guy is into her, but she's not interested in anything serious. She has a life of her own and doesn't want to be tied down. The B-section reinforces this idea, that she's out with her friends and talking to other guys, but he has no right to be upset because they aren't exclusive.
The chorus is the main message of the song, with Solange telling the guy that she's not his girlfriend, and he shouldn't act like it. She's going to do her own thing and put herself first. The second verse is a little more direct, with Solange telling the guy that she's moved on and found someone else who makes her happy. She's not interested in waiting around for him to get his act together.
The bridge is a final warning to the guy that he needs to chill out and not try to control her. She won't tolerate that kind of behavior and will cut him off if he continues. Overall, the song is a message to guys who think they can control women and act possessive when they aren't even in a relationship.

Boy I know that you feeling things
I understand that you have emotions for me
Calling me constantly
You keep calling me all the time
Talking bout you and me
Discussing about the relationship between us
Well even though you never told me
But you never explicitly said anything
That I was the only one so I did my thang, oh
So I started doing my own thing, assuming we were not exclusive
You see me hanging with my girlies
You observe me spending time with my female friends
Hollers at the fellows maybe
I might talk to other guys
But you can't be mad at me
However, you have no right to be angry with me
So there ain't no need to trip no
Therefore, there is no need to worry or stress
Cause I ain't never been your girlfriend
Because I was never officially your girlfriend
Don't be all up on me baby no way
Don't be too close to me, baby
Gonna do my own thang
I am going to do what I want
Putting that on everything
I swear on everything I have
Don't play me like your girlfriend
Don't treat me like I am your girlfriend
Baby no way
I won't accept that
Did you think I would be waiting around
Did you expect me to just wait for you?
That's not how I get down
That is not my style
Someone should have told you
Someone should have informed you beforehand
And even though it hasn't been a while
Although it has not been long since we stopped seeing each other
Someone else makes me smile
Someone else makes me happy
And it feels so good, yeah
And it feels amazing
Don't you act like you own me
Do not act possessive towards me
Don't you try to control me
Do not try to govern me
Cause, baby there ain't no way I'm going for that, no
Because, my dear, I won't accept that behavior
And if you chill you can call me
If you relax and calm down, you can call me
But for now stay up off me
But for now, keep your distance from me
Chorus out
The chorus repeats until the end of the song without any changes or additional lines.
