The band's influences are varied and go from James Taylor to Rubén Blades, as well as The Beatles, Silvio Rodríguez and Caetano Veloso.
In 1996, Son Miserables signed a record deal with Kiwi Records, for the recording of their first album, a self-titled record, at Origen Studios, in Panama City. «Son Miserables» was realeased into the Panamanian market on November 1st, 1996, and ranked among the best-selling albums in local stores, and one of the most requested in local radio stations.
Son Miserables have shared the stage with Rubén Blades, both in Panamá and Puerto Rico, as part of Blades' tour «La Rosa de los Vientos». Later, they recorded a duet with Blades entitled «No te miento» (Son Miserables) that was included in «Red, Hot & Latin», an album whose sales were destined for the fight against AIDS.
In 1998, Son Miserables started working on their second album, this time with the collaboration of John Karpowich, who has worked with Santana, Ricky Martin, Seal and Yes. The second album included 13 tracks that continued Son Miserables' simple, narrative style, but with a more elaborate production. The album was released in 1999, and included popular singles such as «Marchita la flor», «La solución» and «Solo las estrellas bastarán».
In November 2003, the band announced their dissolution and gave a last official performance at the 2003 PanamaRock Awards in Panama City.
Oro Y Cristal
Son Miserables Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
viajando hacia el más allá.
Desierta está mi ciudad,
desierta mi niña amiga.
Hoy se marchó sin pedir nada a cambio,
y a cambio nos quiso dar,
burbujas y olor a paz.
Espero poder llegar,
espero volverte a encontrar.
The lyrics of "Oro Y Cristal" by Son Miserables paint a picture of loss and longing, with a sense of ethereal beauty and spiritual journey. The opening lines describe how gold and crystal evaporate into the air, symbolizing the transient nature of material wealth and purity. The imagery of these precious elements traveling towards the unknown evokes a sense of transition and transformation, perhaps hinting at the passage of time or the journey of the soul.
The singer reflects on their deserted city and a dear friend who has left without asking for anything in return. Instead, the friend leaves behind bubbles and a scent of peace, indicating a departure filled with grace and benevolence. The singer is left thirsty for truth, suggesting a yearning for clarity and understanding in the face of loss and absence.
The lyrics then shift to a more personal reminiscence of the departed friend, with the singer hearing their voice and silence wherever they may be. The friend's soul is likened to a sun, radiating warmth and light even in their absence. Memories of joyful moments together, like playful jumps on the sofa, are cherished, portraying a sense of nostalgia and fondness for the past.
The song concludes with a sense of hope and acceptance of the friend's departure. The imagery of a garden with a vacant space waiting for a new dawn conveys a sense of potential for growth and renewal. The sky is described as holding a place with the friend's name, suggesting a spiritual realm where they may find peace and a chance for rebirth. The singer expresses a desire to reunite with their friend in the afterlife, seeking comfort in the belief that they will meet again.
Overall, "Oro Y Cristal" conveys themes of loss, remembrance, and hope, blending poetic imagery with emotional depth to create a poignant reflection on the transient nature of life and the enduring bonds that connect souls across time and space.
