Confusion
Sonic Youth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I maintain that
Chaos is the future
And beyond it is freedom
Confusion is next and next after that is the truth
You gotta cultivate what you need to need
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth

Stick your fingers
In your mouth
Squeeze your tongue
And wrench it out
From its ugly fucking cancer
Its ugly fucking cancer
Root
You gotta cultivate what you need to need
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth

Chaos is the future
And beyond it is freedom
Confusion is next and next after that is the truth
You gotta cultivate what you need to need
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth

Stick your fingers
In your mouth
Squeeze your tongue
And wrench it out
From its ugly fucking cancer
Its ugly fucking cancer
Root
You gotta cultivate what you need to need
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth
Sonic tooth

Tell nothing but the truth

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sonic Youth's song Confusion Is Next are a bit cryptic, but they touch on themes of chaos, confusion, and truth. The lines "I maintain that chaos is the future and beyond it is freedom" suggest that chaos or disorder may be necessary before one can achieve true freedom. This idea is echoed later in the song when they sing "confusion is next and next after that is the truth." In other words, confusion and disorientation may be necessary steps on the path to discovering the truth.

The repeated line "you gotta cultivate what you need to need, sonic tooth" is a bit enigmatic, but it may refer to the idea of developing a certain sensitivity or intuition that allows you to navigate chaos and confusion in search of truth. The image of sticking your fingers in your mouth and wrenching out your tongue from its "ugly fucking cancer root" may signify the need to root out falsehood or toxic ideas that are holding you back from discovering the truth.

Overall, the lyrics to Confusion is Next are open to interpretation, but they seem to suggest a willingness to embrace chaos and confusion as a necessary part of the journey towards truth and freedom.

Gabba gabba
That's unacceptable

The kids are all hopped up and ready to go
Ready to go now

They weren't shaping
Their boards
Or surfing kNOWaVe s

They were sniffing the glue
Huffing away
Now there going away

Not to get a lobotomy
They're flying to the coast
To check into rehab again in Malibu
Tonight alright

I saw her walking down the street
Dragging her i.v. to the 7-11
I knew it was the end of her
Killed her in the basement
Gonna bury her with all California girls
In a shallow grave
Or the trunk of a chevy
In a valley in Candyland
Called death valley 69
Right about 53rd and 3rd
C'mon let's go
See the ramones
Open up in heaven
For Teenage Big Brother and the carpenters experience
With Karen on drums
Be a ton of fun
Or a drug trainwreck
Either way I wanna go
Hitch a ride to rock away beach
Gabba gabba
Excellent
Gabba gabba
Excellent

You know an album is good when you cannot decide if it is the best album you have ever heard, or the worst album you have ever heard. What an epic album

I had the same reaction hearing it for the first time back in the early 90s. I was a decade late to Sonic Youth's music, but man did it ever surprise me. Wish they were still together.

This is definitely what one of the lower rings of hell sounds like. It's incredible, this album has made me viscerally sick! Combine the impenetrably dark guitars, flailing bass, primal singing, and lyrics about humanity at its worst (and inhumanity) and you get an album that rips the darkness of our souls to the top of our vision.

Incredible. One of the most underrated albums ever.

This album was a shock to my system the first time I heard it. It's better every time I listen to it. There will never be another band like Sonic Youth. They broke the mold completely within guitar music/rock/punk/experimentalism and evolved into a beast of a band, who constantly evolved and put out albums every 2 years for 30 years. The music got less chaotic and more refined as the years went by almost like they were a nuclear explosion in reverse, yet never lost the chaos and dissonant aspects. Even when they were doing melodic masterpieces like "I love you Golden Blue" and "Hoarfrost" they still brought the noise in their interludes and jam outs between verses and what not. Oh and the song structures? Rarely following Verse, Chorus, Verse. . Wish they hadn't broke up. Fuck Thurston for cheating on Kim.

Thanks for vomiting back the cliff notes of everything ever written about Sonic Youth.
