I Want You
Sophie B. Hawkins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The guilty undertaker sighs,
The lonely organ grinder cries,
The silver saxophones say I should refuse you.
The cracked bells and washed-out horns
Blow into my face with scorn,
But it's not that way,
I wasn't born to lose you.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.

The drunken politician leaps
Upon the street where mothers weep
And the saviors who are fast asleep,
They wait for you.
And I wait for them to interrupt
Me drinkin' from my broken cup
And ask me to
Open up the gate for you.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.

Now all my fathers, they've gone down,
True love they've been without it.
But all their daughters put me down
'Cause I don't think about it.

Well, I return to the Queen of Spades
And talk with my chambermaid.
She knows that I'm not afraid
To look at her.
She is good to me
And there's nothing she doesn't see.
She knows where I'd like to be
But it doesn't matter.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.

Now your dancing child with his Chinese suit,
He spoke to me, I took his flute.
No, I wasn't very cute to him,
Was I?
But I did it, though, because he lied
Because he took you for a ride
And because time was on his side
And because I
I want you, I want you,

I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sophie B. Hawkins's song 'I Want You' contain a sense of longing and desperation for the person she wants. The singer refers to various people and objects throughout the lyrics, such as 'the guilty undertaker,' 'the lonely organ grinder,' and 'the drunken politician' to symbolize society's rejection and disapproval of her desire for this person. The cracked bells and washed-out horns that blow into her face with scorn represent the obstacles and critics in her way, trying to convince her to give up on this pursuit.

However, she adamantly refuses to listen to them and acknowledges that she was not born to lose this person. She describes feeling as though they are the missing piece in her life, and her desire for them is so intense that she repeats 'I want you' multiple times throughout the song, emphasizing her desperation.

In the last verse, the singer mentions returning to the Queen of Spades, a reference to a Russian card game, to speak with her chambermaid. The chambermaid sees everything, and the singer is not afraid of her because she knows where she wants to be, and nothing else matters. This verse alludes to the idea that the singer is willing to take risks to get what she wants and is unapologetic about her desire.

Overall, the song uses various symbols and references to represent the societal and personal obstacles that come with pursuing a forbidden love. The singer's intense passion and desire for this person hold the song together, and the repetition of 'I want you' makes the song's message even more powerful.

from 3:30 on -in 40 years as a Dylan fan I have NEVER heard a better delivery of Dylan's beautifully tangled lyrics. This must have made the hair on Dylan's neck stand on end. Superb performance, young lady! Superb performance

@cevinwillson9113

Actually Dylan hated it said it was to sexy and had it removed from the CD

@gaudphree841

@Cevin Willson Which is funny because he played a similar arrangement only two or three years later.

@lindsayevans5297

Cevin, just curious, where did you hear/read about Dylan hating the song and having it removed from the concert album?

@danielesian6575

youtube, please don't let this video be removed!  This is just such a magnificent
combination of talents coming together for a moment in time!  Let's push for a
contribution by anyone wanting it possible for this recording to be on one of those
gold records included on the next Voyager type spacecraft.  Imagine this rendition
moving through the universe.  Wouldn't this be, what others out there, hearing
music for the first time, something we can share?
