Although she'd planned to study sound engineering in Paris, she left to Boston (MA) to study at Berklee College of Music, encouraged by being granted a scholarship... Growing up listening to Stevie Wonder and the Beatles, she discovered gospel and jazz once in the U.S. and since then, understood the roots of it all.
After a couple of years in Boston, Sophie packed her not-that-many bags, and unpacked them a few hours later in New York City. The next day, she was hired in a recording studio. The day after, she started performing backing vocals with artists from the underground Soul music scene. It's only a few months later that Sophie got her act together and started performing her own material.
Sophie's live performances have impressed and seduced a constantly growing audience around the world. So far, Delila has played in prestigious venues in London (Jazz Café, Soho Revue Bar, The Bedford, The Regal Room), New York (Blue Note, Joe's Pub, S.O.B's, B.B .King's), Paris (L'Elysee Montmartre, L'Europeen, Le Tryptique, Le Sentier des Halles), Oslo and Lisboa…
Sophie has been living in London since 2005. She has been developing her career as a solo artist mainly around her own recording studios based on Heathmans Road, Parsons Green SW6. She’s currently finalizing her LP "Hooked" co-written and co-produced with Steve Booker (responsible for worldwide hit “Mercy” by Duffy). Other collaborators on the album are Blair MacKichan, Derrick McKenzie, Jon Kelly, Julien Jabre, Michael Tordjman, Simon Hale and Robert Kirby.
What Did I Do
Sophie Delila Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I remind you of a girl you used to know
She used to wait for you, to call and say hello
Now she's got
Ways that you don't understand
Guess that's why you don't want us to be friends
[Christophe Willem]
(quoi faire, quoi faire)
T'as semé le doute
[Sophie Delila]
You wanted me then but you don't want me now
Not as a friend and you won't tell me why
[Christophe Willem]
Puisque l'amour me fait défaut
Oh oh-oh oh oh-oh
Tous ces sentiments
Oh oh-oh oh oh-oh
[Christophe Willem]
[Sophie Delila]
What do we do?
What do we say when the heart is not over?
If only we knew
Would it be easy to face what we're going through?
[Christophe Willem]
Puisque l'amour me fait défaut oh oh-oh oh oh-oh
Tous ces sentiments oh oh-oh oh oh-oh
Me font défaut
Oh oh oh oh-oh
Me font défaut
Oh oh oh oh-oh
[Sophie Delila]
You wanted me then but you don't want me now
Not as a friend and you won't tell me why
[Christophe Willem]
Puisque l'amour me fait défaut
Oh oh-oh oh oh-oh
Tous ces sentiments
Oh oh-oh oh oh-oh
[Sophie Delila]
Tell me, what did I do?
Oh ooh ooh ooh ooh-ooh
Before you go…
In the lyrics of Sophie Delila's song "What Did I Do," the song tells the story of a relationship that has changed over time. The first verse sung by Sophie Delila speaks about the singer reminding the person of someone they used to know. This person used to wait for communication and connection from the other, but now things have changed. The person seems to have become distant and disconnected because of reasons the singer doesn't understand, which leads to a sense of confusion and hurt. The distance in the relationship becomes evident as the person doesn't want to be friends anymore, leaving the singer wondering what has caused this shift.
The next part is sung by Christophe Willem, expressing his own feelings of longing and confusion in the relationship. He mentions being driven crazy by wanting the other person but not knowing what to do about it. The lyrics convey a sense of doubt and confusion that has turned his world upside down since a certain day, emphasizing the impact of the changed dynamics on his emotions.
Sophie Delila then revisits the idea of the person wanting her in the past but not anymore, without giving any explanation for this change. This lack of closure or understanding adds to the emotional turmoil and unanswered questions in the relationship. The repeated theme of fear of getting hurt or losing the other person is highlighted in Christophe Willem's verses, where he describes the fear of burning his wings in love but still being drawn to the happiness found in the other person's presence.
As the song progresses, the duo asks poignant questions about what to do and say when the heart is not over the relationship. There is a yearning for clarity and honesty, hoping that understanding the situation would make it easier to navigate the emotions they are going through. Christophe Willem's internal struggle between laughing and crying, or the fear of losing love while seeking a sign of affirmation, deepens the emotional complexity depicted in the lyrics.
The song concludes with a plea for answers as Sophie Delila asks, "Tell me, what did I do?" The unresolved feelings and unanswered questions before a potential separation hang heavy in the air, leaving the listener with a sense of emotional vulnerability and longing for closure. Overall, "What Did I Do" delves into the complexities of love, miscommunication, and the uncertainty that can accompany changing relationships.
