Upon recording a few songs at a local studio, she decided to send the demos to three record companies, with no special expectations. Soon Sony Sweden gave her a phone call and offered her a record deal. At this stage, she had never played in front of an audience. Sophie started to record her self-titled debut album in 1995. The album was produced and arranged by Lars Halapi, a long time collaborator who has subsequently worked on all her material.
She was awarded a Grammy at the Swedish Grammy awards as Best Newcomer in 1995, she was also nominated for Best Female Pop Singer. Her album managed Gold status both in Sweden and Japan. After promoting her debut in the US, she finally started to work on her new album in the Autumn of 1997. This second effort entitled Precious Burden came the following year. Since the turbulence of the first album release, Zelmani has started saying no to interviews and only embarks on tour for short periods of time.
The third, fourth and fifth albums, Time to Kill (1999), Sing and Dance (2002) and Love Affair (2003) quickly followed. Ten years after her debut she released a best-of album titled A Decade Of Dreams which also included two new tracks.
Further albums released after this 'best of' are: Memory Loves You (2007), The Ocean and Me (2008), I'm The Rain, (2010), Soul (2011).
Zelmani has also contributed music to the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Dawson's Creek". Her cover of Bob Dylan's "Most Of The Time" appears on the soundtrack to "Masked and Anonymous", and also on the album Cohen - The Scandinavian Report.
Her song "Stand By" appeared in the film "Independence Day" (1996). Her song "Always You" appeared in the film "My Best Friend's Wedding" (1997).

But we've already gone to history
Buried under leaves and snow
I moulder there beside you
By your side
Was the time when all was blooming
And flowers were from you, from you
You were mine and I was yours
Has anyone danced a waltz that short?
It's not so strange how we died
We ended up too far from each other's sides
But by your side
Was the time I was embracing
Embracing life
From underneath my weeping willow
I'm mourning the light
The light
By your side
Was the time I was embracing
Embracing life
From underneath my weeping willow
I'm mourning the light
The light
By your side
By your side
By your side
The lyrics of Sophie Zelmani's song "By Your Side" convey a sense of nostalgia and regret over a lost love. The opening lines express a mutual desire between the singer and their former lover, but they acknowledge that their relationship has already become a thing of the past. The lines, "Buried under leaves and snow, I moulder there beside you" suggest a sense of being buried, as if they are unable to move on from their former relationship, likening themselves to vegetation trapped under snow.
The chorus of the song expresses a yearning for happier times when they were together, with "By your side was the time when all was blooming, and flowers were from you, from you." These lines paint a picture of a time when things were simpler and more joyful. The second verse, "You were mine and I was yours, Has anyone danced a waltz that short?" suggests that their relationship may have been brief but intense. The line "we ended up too far from each other's sides" alludes to the fact that the relationship gradually fell apart, and they gradually grew apart from each other.
The ending lines of the song repeat the chorus, emphasizing the longing for the past happiness they once shared. The final lines, "From underneath my weeping willow, I'm mourning the light, the light" create a somber tone and imagery, invoking a sense of mourning and grief for the lost relationship.

I want you and you want me
We both have feelings for each other
But we've already gone to history
Our relationship is already in the past
Buried under leaves and snow
Our relationship is hidden and forgotten
I moulder there beside you
I am stuck in the past with you
By your side
When we were together
Was the time when all was blooming
Our relationship was flourishing
And flowers were from you, from you
You brought happiness and beauty to my life
You were mine and I was yours
We belonged to each other
Has anyone danced a waltz that short?
Our time together was too brief
It's not so strange how we died
Our relationship ended naturally
We ended up too far from each other's sides
We drifted apart
But by your side
When we were together
Was the time I was embracing
I was happy and content
Embracing life
Enjoying life to the fullest
From underneath my weeping willow
Reflecting on the past
I'm mourning the light
Missing the happiness and brightness that was once there
The light
The happiness that we once shared
By your side
When we were together
By your side
When we were together
By your side
When we were together
