Officially founded in 1989, the Germany based Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble… Read Full Bio ↴Officially founded in 1989, the Germany based Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows is one of the very few dark groups/projects who have based the trinity of their music, poetry and visual appearance on the explicit emphasis of the highly individual expression of pain, isolation, depression, token suicides and the desperate search for the "sacred reunion"; all acted out by their sole protagonist – the transgender Anna-Varney Cantodea.
Best described as "introverted exhibitionism", the holistic concept of their ritualistic/Jungian art is not necessarily rooted in the grounds of a commonly accepted sense of aesthetics – which is one of the many aspects that gives their work its serious and most unique character. Though their music playfully fuses elements of classical, baroque, medieval, and even electronic music, the essence of Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows always remains entirely "goth".
Despite the fact that to this very day they still refuse to perform live in front of a human audience, Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows have long gathered cult status in underground circles worldwide.
Strongly recommended to be approached only with an open heart and mind, the profound darkness (and occasionally subversive humour) of their multi-layered (yet fragile) art is mainly intended as a spiritual healing-process for the wounded soul.

I thought Danzig's "Mother" was dark humor when posted on Facebook on Mother's Day, but damn! I have a melancholic temperament, but Anna's stuff actually makes me feel empty inside. I'm not talking about empty of ego or no-mind or such--but empty. Is she a hypnotist? Is it some frequency? Well, I give it an A for classiness. It is art, for sure, and I like the old sounds. I feel bad fir one who hurts enough to make tracks like these. Alice Cooper's early stuff could get downright disturbing, but he wasn't existentially jacked up.

Quand Anna a perdue sa Mère elle était effondrée. Sa mère est morte d'un cancer (lequel ? Impossible a dire) a l'époque des Myspace elle avait postée une photo d'elle avec le mot DEATH ...j'ai l'impression que la mort de sa mère
comme elle le dit dans une interview , pour OBSKURE Magazine me semble t-il[...] Ma musique était calme ; car a cet époque j'étais calme (zen) .. J'en ai verser des larmes en écoutant cet chansons et bien d'autres . Sopor Aeternus and the Ensemble of Shadows est bien plus qu'un simple projet musical neofolk darkwave , c'est tout une spiritualité (Notre Déesse Anna Varney Cantodea ) m'a aidé car a ce(s) moment(s) de ma vie j'étais tellement triste que je me suis identifié a ses chansons .
