Han Tog Et Nattog
Souvenirs Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
sommergardiner, der meldes orkan
månen er oppe og byen er varm
hundene hyler i gydernes larm
han tog et nattog og mig lod han simpelthen blie´
halvtomme gader, fremmede smil
ti dages venten i tvungen eksil
The song "Han tog et nattog" by Souvenirs, is a melancholic song that depicts the feelings of someone who has been abandoned by a loved one. Beginning with the first verse, the atmospherics of a cold winter month is described from the perspective of somebody standing on a balcony, watching the night sky. The somber tone is set with the person's description of the summer curtains swaying in anticipation of an oncoming hurricane, while the city below is full of life. This contrasting scene foreshadows the bitterness of the lyrics to come.
In the chorus, the singer describes how the absent lover has gone, leaving the singer alone. The deserted streets and strange smiles of passerby's depicting a feeling of alienation and loneliness. The lover has left the singer to wait for ten days in what is described as "forced exile." Left in the middle of an upswing, the singer sings that the holiday has come to a stop because the lover has left on a night train, and left the singer behind.
In the last verse, the mood is still somber as it is sung that time is passing slowly by, represented by moments spent sunbathing or taking a bath, with the singer caught in her painful wait. The narrative perspective changes to a more practical one, deciding if possessions should be sold to afford to follow the absent lover. The mention of the key to room 205, possibly representing a room where the two shared romantic moments in a hotel or vacation spot, reinforces the memory of the departed lover. The song ends with the lover leaving on a real train while the singer is left behind, trying to come to terms with the new reality.
