Sea Of Teeth
Sparklehorse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can you feel the wind of Venus on your skin?
Can you taste the crush of a sunset's dying blush?
Stars will always hand in summer's bleeding veils

Can you feel the rings of Saturn on your finger?
Can you taste the ghosts who shed their creaking hosts?
But seas forever boil, trees will turn to soil
Stars will always hand in summer's bleeding veils

But seas forever boil, trees will turn to soil

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sparklehorse's song "Sea of Teeth" seem to be exploring the themes of nature and the impermanence of life. The opening lines invite the listener to imagine experiencing the atmospheric conditions of Venus, suggesting the otherworldliness of this track's message. As the second line mentions the "sunset's dying blush", a sense of melancholy and decay seeps into the lyrics. The next verse asks the listener to consider the rings of Saturn, once again touching on space but also hinting at a feeling of powerlessness - while we are cosmic beings, we are limited by our physical bodies.

The lyrics continue on this theme of impermanence with the lines "can you taste the ghosts who shed their creaking hosts?", evoking images of a never-ending cycle of birth and death. The use of the word "hosts" adds an extra layer of eeriness to the imagery, as if the ghosts are possessing something beyond just themselves. The final lines, "seas forever boil, trees will turn to soil" summarize the message of the song. No matter how eternal something may seem at first glance, it will eventually crumble and decay.

This song is so bittersweet… makes me think of all the wonder and beauty of our planet and how its bones creak with all the lives that have come before us and all the lives that will come after us. How humans have always been human and how we’ve been looking at the same oceans and stars for eternity.
But it also makes me think of the sadness of the inevitable end of everything, how fragile things are. How nothing good ever stays and how the world is cold and indifferent to our suffering.
I think that basically, it makes me feel like the speck of dust in the universe that I am and it makes me want to cry.

Beautifully comforting... Even with lyrics that acknowledge the inevitability of death.

@StrangeCreed

I have some rather intense issues with anger, but this song is a surefire measure to bring me back from the brink.

@papi_dummy

his music always puts me in a very certain mood when i hear it. feels like when you're going through a shitty time in life and you're looking back on those memories from when you were a kid and everything in the world was beautiful and new and you can almost feel the sunshine.
