The band's long career has seen them successfully adopt many different musical genres; including glam pop, power pop, electronic dance music and mainstream pop. Despite these many styles, a recognizable "Sparks sound" remains throughout, and they have enjoyed a large cult following since their first releases. Sparks have been highly influential on the development of popular music, in particular on the late 1970s scene, when in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder (and Telex subsequently), they reinvented themselves as an electronic pop duo, and abandoned the traditional rock band line up. In contrast to the esteem in which they are held by such peers as Depeche Mode, New Order, Morrissey and They Might Be Giants, who all cite Sparks as a major influence, their almost constantly changing styles and unique visual presentations have sometimes seen them dismissed as a novelty act.
The 2002 release of Lil' Beethoven, their self-described "genre-defining opus", and 2006's Hello Young Lovers (their 20th studio album) have brought Sparks renewed critical and commercial success, and seen them continue to "steer clear of pop conventions."
The 2021 documentary film 'The Sparks Brothers', directed by Edgar Wright, has renewed interest in the band for a new audience.
The Number One Song In Heaven
Sparks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Written, of course, by the mightiest hand
All of the angels are sheep in the fold of their master
They always follow the Master and his plan
This is the number one song in heaven
Why are you hearing it now, you ask
Maybe you're closer to here than you imagine
This is the number one song in heaven
Written, of course, by the mightiest hand
All of the angels are sheep in the fold of their master
They always follow the Master and his plan
This is the number one song in heaven
Why are you hearing it now, you ask
Maybe you're closer to here than you imagine
Maybe you're closer to here than you care to be
The opening line of Sparks's "The Number One Song In Heaven" alludes to the idea of a celestial hit song, a piece of music that not only resonates with the human soul but is also beloved by the angels themselves. The song's chorus is an assertion that this is indeed the "number one song in heaven", written by the "mightiest hand", presumably that of God himself. The lyrics suggest that the angels are in complete awe of this song, likening themselves to sheep who follow the lead of their master, always following his plan. This image of obedient, passive angels speaks to the idea of religious obedience, and the song suggests that those who submit to the will of a higher power will find themselves in the ultimate place of harmony in the afterlife.
The rest of the verses explore the idea of why the listener may be hearing this song now. The lyrics suggest that perhaps the listener is "closer to here than [they] care to be", hinting at the idea of mortality and the possibility of death. The chorus is repeated in each verse, emphasizing the importance of this song and its powerful message. Overall, the song is a reflection on the meaning of life and the comforts of faith, suggesting that there is a "number one song in heaven" waiting for those who follow the right path.
