You're brooding o'er you're old disgrace
That black FitzWilliam stormed your place
He sent you to the Fern
Grey said victory was sure
Soon the firebrand he'd secure;
Until he met at Glenmalure
With Fiach MacHugh O'Byrne
Curse and swear Lord Kildare
Fiach will do what Fiach will dare
Now FitzWilliam, have a care
Fallen is your star, low
Up with halberd out with sword
On we'll go for by the lord
Fiach MacHugh has given the word
Follow me up to Carlow
From Tassagart to Clonmore
There flows a stream of Saxon gore
Oh, great is Rory Oge O'More
At sending loons to Hades
White is sick and Grey is fled
And now for black FitzWilliam's head
We'll send it over, dripping red
To Liza and her ladies
You might also like
If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Curse and swear Lord Kildare
Fiach will do what Fiach will dare
Now FitzWilliam, have a care
Fallen is your star, low
Up with halberd out with sword
On we'll go for by the lord
Fiach MacHugh has given the word
Follow me up to Carlow
Curse and swear Lord Kildare
Fiach will do what Fiach will dare
Now FitzWilliam, have a care
Fallen is your star, low
Up with halberd out with sword
On we'll go for by the lord
Fiach MacHugh has given the word
Follow me up to Carlow
See the swords of Glen Imayle
They flash all o'er the English pale
See all the children of the Gael
Beneath O'Byrne's banners
Rooster of the fighting stock
Would you let a Saxon cock
Crow out upon an Irish rock?
Fly up and we'll teach him manners
Curse and swear Lord Kildare
Fiach will do what Fiach will dare
Now FitzWilliam, have a care
Fallen is your star, low
Up with halberd out with sword
On we'll go for by the lord
Fiach MacHugh has given the word
Follow me up to Carlow
Curse and swear Lord Kildare
Fiach will do what Fiach will dare
Now FitzWilliam, have a care
Fallen is your star, low
Up with halberd out with sword
On we'll go for by the lord
Fiach MacHugh has given the word
Follow me up to Carlow
"Follow Me Up To Carlow" is a traditional Irish folk song that tells the story of a rebellion against the English crown during the 16th century. The song is set during the time when the Gaelic Irish lords were facing the encroachment of English forces in Ireland. It highlights the figure of Fiach MacHugh O'Byrne, an Irish rebel leader, and his call for his fellow countrymen to rise up against the English.
The lyrics begin by addressing MacCahir Og, who is urged to let go of his past disgrace, caused by the siege of his lands by FitzWilliam, an English lord. MacCahir Og is encouraged to join Fiach MacHugh O'Byrne, who is seen as a symbol of resistance against the English. Lord Kildare is warned of the bravery and audacity of Fiach and FitzWilliam is reminded that his power has diminished. The song emphasizes the determination of the Irish rebels to fight back and reclaim their land.
Throughout the song, there is a call to arms, with references to swords, halberds, and fighting. The lyrics also mock the English, likening them to roosters on an Irish rock that should be taught a lesson. The song creates a sense of unity and pride among the Irish, rallying them behind their leader and encouraging them to follow him to Carlow, a town in Ireland.
Overall, "Follow Me Up To Carlow" serves as a historical anthem and a reminder of the struggles and resilience of the Irish people against English oppression.
