1) Spoon is an American indie rock band from Austin, Texas. The band was formed in late 1993 by lead singer/guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno. Current members also include: Eric Harvey (keyboard, guitar, percussion, backing vocals) and Rob Pope (bass, backing vocals - replaced Joshua Zarbo in 2007).
After releasing their debut LP Telephono on Matador Records, the band signed with Elektra in 1998, but the contract was dropped soon after the band released A Series of Sneaks. In response the band released a two-song single titled The Agony of Laffitte (referring to Elektra A&R man Ron Laffitte). Eventually they signed to Merge Records.
Spoon has been met with widespread critical acclaim. Girls Can Tell, released in 2001, sold more copies than both their previous releases combined. Kill the Moonlight accomplished the same feat a year later. Gimme Fiction was released on May 10, 2005 and continued the trend of increasing popularity for the band.
Britt Daniel wrote much of the soundtrack to the 2006 film Stranger Than Fiction. Four tracks by Spoon are also featured.
The band released their sixth studio album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga on July 10, 2007; those who purchased the first pressing also received a bonus disc titled Get Nice!.
Transference is their seventh studio album. It was released on January 18, 2010 in Europe, and on January 19 in North America, to moderately positive reviews.

Don't Make Me a Target
Spoon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We don't know why he go so far
And keep on marching along
Beating his drum
Thugs and sticks and bats and balls
For nuclear dicks with dialect drawls
They come from a parking lot town
Don't make me a target
Don't make me a target
When you reach back in his mind
Feels like he's breaking the law
There's something back there he got
That nobody knows
He never claimed to say what he says
He smells like the inside of closets and stairs
The kind where nobody goes
Don't make me a target
Don't make me a target
Don't make me a target
Don't make me a target
Don't make me a target
The lyrics to Spoon's "Don't Make Me a Target" seem to touch on a number of themes, including alienation, violence, and the fear of becoming a victim. The opening lines refer to "the man from the stars," a figure who is mysterious and exotic. While we don't know why he has "gone so far," we do know that he is marching along to the beat of his own drum. This seems to suggest that the man from the stars is someone who is different and perhaps not easily understood by those around him.
The next few lines mention "thugs" and "nuclear dicks" who come from a "parking lot town." These individuals are associated with violence and aggression, and seem to be the antithesis of the man from the stars. The line "where nothing lives in the Sun" reinforces the sense of desolation and decay that surrounds these individuals. By contrast, the man from the stars is someone full of life and energy.
The repeated refrain of "Don't make me a target" adds to the sense of fear and anxiety that permeates the song. The man from the stars seems to be worried about becoming a victim of violence or aggression. There is a feeling that he is different and perhaps vulnerable because of this. The line "when you reach back in his mind" suggests that there is something hidden in the man's psyche that could make him a target. Perhaps it is his otherness, his difference, that makes him so vulnerable.
The final verses of the song refer to the man from the star's "smell," which is reminiscent of "the inside of closets and stairs." This creates an image of darkness, mystery, and hiddenness. It also suggests that there may be something unsavory or unpleasant about the man's character. In the end, the song leaves us with a sense of unease and uncertainty. We are left wondering who the man from the stars really is and what fate may befall him.
