Theme to Wendel Stivers
Spoon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I do count the clock that tells the time
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night,
When I behold the violet past prime
And sable curls all silvered o'er with white
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd
And summer's green all girded up in sheaves
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard:
Then of thy beauty do I question make
That though among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake,
And die as fast as they see others grow,
And nothing 'gainst time's scythe can make defense,
Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.
Primary
(All right now!)
The primary means of motivation,
Walks onto her place on thirteenth street.

The primary means of motivation,
Paints a picture on her lover's face.

Overall Meaning

The first four lines of Spoon's song "Theme to Wendel Stivers" are actually from Shakespeare's Sonnet 12. The sonnet speaks of the inescapability of time and how all beautiful things must eventually wither away. When the singer says "When I do count the clock that tells the time," he is referencing the beginning of the sonnet where the singer is contemplating time. The singer then goes on to describe the natural world and how everything is subject to time's scythe.

The last four lines of the sonnet are where the singer goes from reflecting on the universality of mortality to reflecting specifically on a person's beauty. "Then of thy beauty do I question make" refers to the beauty of the person listening to the song. The singer acknowledges that even though this person is beautiful now, time will eventually take its toll. The singer goes on to say that the only defense against time's scythe is to have children, who will continue the cycle of life.

The rest of the song moves away from the Shakespearean theme and into an exploration of motivation. The singer describes a person who is the primary means of motivation for those around her. This person seems to be an artist ("paints a picture on her lover's face") and occupies a central place in the neighborhood ("on 13th street").
