Sugarboy
St. Vincent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh yeah, oh yeah
Oh yeah, oh yeah (Boys)
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Oh yeah, oh yeah (Girls)

Sugarboy, I'm in need
How I wish for somethin' sweet
Sugarboy, I am weak
Got a crush on tragedy

Oh, here I go
A casualty hangin' on from the balcony
Oh, here I go
Makin' a scene
Oh, here I am
Your pain machine

I am a lot like you (boys)
I am alone like you (girls)
I am a lot like you (boys)
I am alone like you (girls)
I am a lot like you (boys)
I am alone like you (girls)
I am a lot like you (boys)
I am alone like you (girls)

Sugargirl, figurine
Pledge all your allegiance to me
Sugargirl, dissolve in me
Got a crush from kicked-in teeth

Oh, here I go
A casualty hangin' on from the balcony
Oh, here I go
Makin' a scene
Oh, here I am
Your pain machine

I am a lot like you (boys)
I am alone like you (girls)
I am a lot like you (boys)
I am alone like you (girls)
I am a lot like you (boys)
I am alone like you (girls)
I am a lot like you (boys)
I am alone like you (girls)

Overall Meaning

The song "Sugarboy" by St. Vincent is a reflection on the desire for something sweet and satisfying amidst the chaos and pain of life. The repetition of "oh yeah" throughout the song creates a sense of urgency and desperation, as if the singer is desperately trying to convince herself that everything will be okay if she can just find some sweetness in life. The lyrics "Sugarboy, I'm in need, how I wish for somethin' sweet" and "Sugargirl, figurine, pledge all your allegiance to me" further emphasize this desire for comfort and stability, even if it means relying on someone else.

The chorus, "I am a lot like you, I am alone like you," speaks to the universal human experience of feeling alone and struggling to connect with others. The use of gendered pronouns ("boys" and "girls") suggests that these feelings are not specific to one gender but are instead something that everyone can relate to. The line "Your pain machine" in the second verse suggests that the singer may be using the pain of others to try to make sense of her own pain and find a way to cope.

Overall, "Sugarboy" is a complex meditation on the human experience, with its repeated phrases and gendered imagery drawing attention to the shared experiences of joy and pain, desire and disappointment.

The way she connects it to Los Ageless at 1:49 is still probably the most iconic moment on the album

sooooooo good. It makes it feel like she is one of us when she def is not

Yes exactly! Starts out with a synth beat like Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" then onto "Los Ageless" with a slight hint of U2's "Discotheque" thrown in for good measure. Love it! However - the accompanying video looks like a still from a game of Twister that went horribly wrong after being inspired by a dream that Penn & Teller were operating the controls of the Starship Enterprise transporter during an obvious malfunction.

@TheDemonLilith ooh I didn't know that, that would explain why they are in the same key. I love how she decided to keep the motif of L.A. and connect those two songs thematically with it. Now I really wanna read more articles/interviews to find out more interesting facts like that
