I'm not even suprised that paranorman was the darkest one 💀

2000dino

To be fair, I still find Coraline to be easily their darkest film. Paranorman might be superficially darker purely due to how it utilizes classical horror aesthetics, but Coraline tackles incredibly dark themes (more specifically, grooming) and has arguably a more sinister, lovecraftian aesthetic.

SpringZero123

Coraline does play with a lot of sinister themes, but ParaNorman didn't just tackle classical horror aesthetics, it tackles a lot of horrifying issues that us humans as a modern society still have troubles with resolving; The killing of an innocent child simply because the people around her can't fully understand what she is and thought it was right and appropriate to do so goes beyond what a stereotyped classic horror movie is
To me, the darkest thing about that is LAIKA didn't need to go that direction, or even needed to show that concept, but they did so anyway in a very subtle and terrifying fashion that not a lot of films–especially animated films from modern animation studios–are known to do.

@SpringZero123 I agree with that, it's just that Paranorman was by far not the first piece of children-targeted media to specifically tackle witch trials and the prosecution and homicide of innocent children - and, though Laika accomplished it very competently, I still feel they didn't do it as elegantly as they did with Coraline and its themes (which, themselves, I've never seen being tackled in children-targeted media).

I also find grooming to be a more sinister theme due to how timeless it is. It was happening during the witch trials times as it is still happening now. It finds its way into seemingly the most innocent of places - and that's beyond terrifying. Yes, prejudice is still absolutely a real thing (heck, I'd know that as a disabled, queer, gender non-conforming person), but, at least in most countries, you won't see people lawfully being burned alive anymore. Of course the Salem Witch Trials were terrifying, not saying they weren’t - they just kind of feel like a distant moment in history.

Not wanting to discredit Paranorman, I like it, I just personally feel like Coraline is in a whole other level when it comes to horror, genuinely being one of my favorite horror films of all time.

@2000dino agree to disagree ig,, glad to hear ur thoughts on it :D

SpringZero123

we sure do agree that LAIKA knows how to properly traumatize children LMAO

I guess we know what could top Coraline…paraNorman!

Wait corpse bride is a laika film? Also what is moongirl?

SpringZero123

Moon Girl is an animated short film, the first film that has the LAIKA logo attached to it, directed by Henry Selick (who also happens to direct LAIKA's first feature-length film, Coraline).

Meanwhile, Corpse Bride is directed by Tim Burton and is produced alongside LAIKA Studios (formerly Laika Entertainment as indicated in Corpse Bride's opening scene).

@SpringZero123 and Wildwood is up top and not the darkest because it’s not even announced yet or a trailer we only just know the concept art and that’s why it’s the least darkest
