What Child Is This?
Stacie Orrico Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What child is this, who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap, is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Come peasant king to own Him,
The King of kings, salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

What child is this child
What child is this child

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Stacie Orrico's "What Child Is This?" paints a serene image of the baby Jesus lying in his mother Mary's lap as shepherds watch over him and angels sing sweet songs. The question "What child is this?" refers to the awe and wonder that people must have felt upon encountering the baby Jesus, who was born to bring salvation to the world. The second verse shifts the focus to the gifts of the Magi, who brought incense, gold, and myrrh to honor the newborn king. The final line "Let loving hearts enthrone Him" suggests that while the rich and powerful may offer gifts, it is ultimately the love and devotion of ordinary people that will exalt Jesus to his rightful place as King of kings.

Overall, "What Child Is This?" is a hymn that celebrates the miraculous birth of Jesus and encourages listeners to recognize his divinity and to honor him with love and devotion. The song invites us to reflect on the question of who this child is, and to consider the profound impact that his life and teachings have had on the world.

I love Stacie, but I’m not feeling this at all. I don’t want to hear Christmas songs or the National anthem turned into soulful r and b ballads or slow jams because that’s not the way they were intended to be sung. Having a beautiful voice doesn’t mean you need to butcher traditional songs with a traditional sound. Even Mariah Carey, for the most part, still sang the classics the way they should be sung on her first Christmas album.
