Without A Song
Stan Getz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Without a song the day would never end
Without a song the road would never bend
When things go wrong a man ain't got a friend
Without a song
That field of corn would never see a plow
That field of corn would be deserted now
A man is born but he's no good no how
Without a song
I got my trouble and woe but, sure as I know, the Jordan will roll
And I'll get along as long as a song, strong in my soul
I'll never know what makes the rain to fall
I'll never know what makes that grass so tall
I only know there ain't no love at all
Without a song
I've-a got my trouble and woe and, sure as I know, the Jordan will roll
And I'll get along as long as a song, strong in my soul
I'll-a never know what makes that rain to fall
I'll never know what makes the grass so tall

I only know there ain't no love at all
Without a song

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song “Without A Song” by Stan Getz express the importance of music in our lives. The first two lines of the song suggest that music brings a sense of fullness and motion to our lives that would not exist without it. The third line suggests that when life gets hard, music is a reliable companion that never deserts us. The fourth, fifth, and sixth lines take a different angle and suggest that music is necessary for the very existence of some things in life, like the plowing of a field, while the seventh and eighth line suggests that, without music, there is no inherent value or love in life.

The final lines of the song imply that, despite the unknown mysteries of life and nature, music is strong enough to help us overcome difficulties and keep us moving forward. The overall tone of the song is one of appreciation and reliance on music to add meaning and positivity to our existence.

I remember purchasing this album in 1956 at the Colony Record shop on Chicago Ave in Chicago. All the songs were wonderful and Stan's tone made me a friend for life. I was 14 and already a jazz fan forever.
