All Of You
Stan Kenton and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song

You are the angel glow that lights a star
The dearest things I know are what you are
Some day my happy arms will hold you
And some day I'll know that moment divine

When all the things you are, are mine

Overall Meaning

In the song "All of You" by Stan Kenton and His Orchestra, the lyrics convey a deep sense of longing and romantic yearning. The first verse describes the person to whom the lyrics are addressed as "the promised kiss of springtime," symbolizing a sense of renewal, hope, and joy that this person brings into the singer's life. This imagery contrasts with the loneliness and desolation of winter, suggesting that the presence of this individual can bring warmth and light even in the darkest times, making the singer's isolation seem more bearable.

The second verse continues to paint a vivid picture of the person's impact on the singer, likening them to the "breathless hush of evening" that precedes a beautiful song. This imagery suggests a sense of anticipation and wonder, as if the mere presence of this individual creates a moment of stillness before something magical unfolds. It highlights the power and beauty that the person holds, evoking a sense of awe and reverence for them.

The third verse uses celestial imagery to further emphasize the person's importance and brilliance in the singer's eyes. They are compared to an "angel glow that lights a star," suggesting that this person radiates a special kind of light and brings a sense of wonder and inspiration into the singer's life. The lyrics express a deep appreciation for the person's essence and qualities, indicating that they are cherished and beloved by the singer.

The final lines of the song express a sense of hope and anticipation for the future, as the singer looks forward to the moment when they can finally embrace and hold this special person. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and desire for a blissful union, where the singer envisions a perfect moment when all that the person represents is finally within their grasp. This conclusion to the song encapsulates the overarching theme of love, longing, and the profound connection between two individuals.

way ahead of its time ... or perhaps outside of its time

Heard this the first time on my way home one dark Sunday night, it was played on the "jazz show" of my local public radio station. It took several days to even find out the title and performer, several more to find this video. I now have the lp and listen to it fairly often, I cannot get enough of this track (the rest of the album is pretty good too).

I can't thank you enough for posting this album! I've been looking for the entire album, and particularly this cut, for years, with no luck -- and here it is!!! A great way to start my day, with the inimitable Stan Kenton and June Christy. Thank you, thank you!

You bet, Rachael - very glad I've been able to quench that thirst. :)

This piece perhaps even more than some of the other Kenton/Christy tunes from 1947 indicates that in jazz and popular music something had changed radically. There is no 'love-above' and 'you-true' to be found in the Audrey Lacey lyric (Then a young college student, and an acquaintance of Stan) but rather: 'Thin crystal sheets of hysterical laughter' or 'I can not bear the thing I hear!!'

World War II was over just two years and now there was appearently a need for something else than slik entertainment.

The last part of this song, after the ferocious climax, is relatively quiet but incredibly eerie........
