My father and I never got along on most things. The one thing we absolutely agreed on was Star Trek. As entertainment, art, and philosophy.

The fondest memories I have of my father are watching and discussing this show, down to the minutiae of plot and character details.

Star Trek gave me a connection with a man who was damn near impossible to be close to.

I will always get chills listening to this song.

RIP, dad.

I miss watching TNG with you, and spending hours discussing every detail of every episode. I miss you being around to enjoy it with more, though.

The 1960's theme song was about intrigue, discovery and sophistication. Beautiful to this day. This theme was about adventure, discovery and deeply emotional. No wonder my generation loved it so much!

Roddenberry originally wanted Jerry Goldsmith for composer for the original series. He was too busy at the time but offered his colleague and arranger, Alexander Courage :) later he scored the motion picture.

Gonna have to disagree there. Star Wars to me is very fulfilling and stimulating but there are other areas of that stimulation that Star Trek scratches like the idea the idea of AI being a sentient lifeform and thus entitled to all the rights of a normal person, the horrors of war, etc.

Listening to the themes, they really follow the energy of the show. DS9 gives a feeling of isolation (and later gets more dramatic). Voyager is dreamy, slow, but hopeful. This is very positive and energetic.

We had this as our exit music as we walked back down the aisle. It did sound good played on the church organ. It's a great piece of music. I'm not a Star Trek fan, not into Sci fi at all. this theme was initially the theme of the first star trek movie "The motion picture" featuring the cast from the original series. it was such a success that it was later adopted as the theme of the new series "The next generation"

It is actually an adaptation of both the original series theme and the Motion Picture theme. The first thirty seconds or so are a modern adaptation of the first opening(as is the "final frontier" voiceover, obviously), and then it moves to an adaptation of the Motion Picture theme.

Can't believe there are people idiotic enough to compare Star Trek to Star Wars here in the comments section. It's an unfair comparison. From a plot, story, character and setting standpoint, they're completely different! One is an episodic, "alien-of-the-week" thriller that focuses on the breadth and expanse of space, the other is a character-driven space opera that focuses on depth and growth of characters and the completion of character arcs. I'm not saying Star Wars didn't have some massive expanse to it (it did), nor am I saying Star Trek didn't have likable, dynamic characters (it did), but where does the focus of the story really lie? Star Wars could have been set entirely on one planet and it would have only minimal ramifications on the plot (which is about Luke Skywalker going through the Hero's Journey). Trek, on the other hand, has the sci-fi setting as a central plot element. It's the unknown that we, the viewer, get to explore and confront alongside Kirk/Picard. Speaking of which, in Star Trek, the crew is expendable. Not just the redshirts, the whole cast. It doesn't matter if it's Kirk and Spock and McCoy or if it's Picard and Riker and Data, because the adventure is what's really important. It wouldn't be Star Wars without Luke Skywalker being sent on the path of the Jedi by Obi-Wan, encountering Han and Chewie, saving Leia, defeating the Empire and redeeming Lord Vader.

The theme for the NG borrowed Jerry Goldsmith's theme for Star Trek I, the movie (1979).
I believe this same theme appeared later in the movie sequence, for Star Trek V.

Indeed it is - I saw it in the cinema back in '79. ST TNG mixed it up a little with the OS opening bars, but it was originally from the Motion Picture. Listening to the cinematic version, it somehow seems a 'bigger' sound, a little bit more epic than on TV. Still, why waste a great theme and it suits ST TNG very well. Ironically, the first movie was the result of initially developing Trek as a new TV series for the 1970's. ST TNG was the end result of a desire to do this about ten years later.

just started watching TNG for the first time at 25. seeing all the nostalgic stories in the comments is beautiful. what a lovely series this will be. currently nearing the end of season 1. I'm surprised at how funny it is at times. every character is so unique too. i could go on. it's just great.

There's this joke Duke video I found about a Gerald x Arnold fanfic. I loved the song they used in the background, because it just worked so well. I searched for years trying to find it (since 2016), but I just couldn't.
I was waiting for an appointment I had with my English professor two days ago, and in the waiting room, another professor's ringtone goes off, and it was the song! Another professor started commenting on it; and this is when I decide to listen in on their convo to try and find out what song it was (they were talking pretty loudly, so it wasn't really spying), and one of them says "yeah, I loved that theme. What was it from again?" and the professor responds "it's the theme from Star Trek the Next Generation." I was so ecstatic to have finally found the song! Thank you random professor for having your ringer on full-volume, and thank you English professor for being 3 minutes late so I could hear this beauty, and finally find what I had been searching for for so long!

This was the first Star Trek theme I ever heard, so when I heard the TOS theme, I was in disbelief. At how bad it was. That music is stuck in the time of its making. This will live on.

This reminds me very much of being a kid watching some episodes with my dad and even when I didn't watch with him I'd hear it. Any theme (TNG, Voyager, DS9--even though he didn't care for DS9) remind me of him
