Over My Head
Starfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

After the words have all been said
After the songs are sung
I realize I've only but just begun
Trying to wrap my mind around
Extravagant love come down
Leaves me undone
Finds me with nothing to say
Chorus:
The reach of Your fame
The power in Your name
Your glory surrounds me
It's over my head, It's over my head
The shame of the cross
For all that it cost
This friendship astounds me
It's over my head, It's over my head

Unquenchable songs and endless praise
A million tongues poised to sing
Could still not convey
The worth that Your name deserves
Beauty for ashes
Joy for pain
Mercy instead of my blame
Ruins me for more
I'm lost in Your presence, Lord

(Chorus)
Hallelujah...

Lost for the words to say
I'm left here in disarray
Waiting for You, waiting on truth
I've thrown reason overboard
Knowing that there's still more
I don't yet believe, I can't even perceive
I can't seem to understand
Can't seem to find my way
It's over my head, it's over my head
Learning this mystery
Trust what I cannot see
It's over my head, it's over my head
The wonder of all You've made
Foundations Your hands have laid
Bringing me back to my knees, to my knees
I'm lost for the words to say
Lost for another way
Bringing me back to my knees, to my knees
I'm lost for the words to say
Lost for another way
Ruined for anything other than Your love
I'm desperate to know You, Lord
Desperate for what's in store
Finding my hope in only You, in only You
Take me beyond this door

Lead me to something more
Open my heart up for more of You, more of You

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Starfield's song Over My Head begins with reflection on the power and wonder of God. The singer sings of the inadequacy of all the words and songs that have been written to describe the majesty of God, and how they have only just begun to grasp it. The next lines move towards a description of the love of God, how it is extravagant and powerful, and how it leaves the singer "undone" and "with nothing to say." The chorus then breaks in, emphasizing the "reach" of God's fame, the "power" in God's name, and the way God's "glory surrounds" the singer, who is being overcome by it all. The shame of the cross is also mentioned, and how, despite that cost, God invites the singer into a friendship that is astounding and beyond comprehension. The chorus repeats and ends with a hallelujah.

The second verse begins with a description of unquenchable praise and how it is still insufficient to convey the worth of God's name. The singer is overcome by the grace and mercy that God offers instead of the blame that the singer deserves. This ruins the singer for anything other than God's love and leads the singer to be "lost in Your presence, Lord." The chorus then repeats, followed by a bridge that emphasizes the singer's desperation to know God and be led to something more. The singer is aware that there is more beyond this door of understanding and perception, so they ask to be taken to that place where they can encounter more of God. The song ends with a plea for God to open the singer's heart to more of Him.
