Monkey Business
Starz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now the monkey did a da dance
But daddy took a ch ch chance
Daddy's in some struggle now
'Cause daddy lost his pants

He's got a monkey on his back
He's taking up the slack
Got it tied up in a sack
Ooh, in a sack

Scoot it, yeah... shoot it
It's so easy a child could do it

Yeah, monkey got my brother
Kicked him in the mouth
His head went North
And his teeth went South

He's got a monkey on his back
And his face is turning black
Got it tied up in a sack
Ooh, in a sack

Scoot it, yeah... shoot it
It's so easy a child could do it

Too much monkey business
Oh, there's too much monkey business
Too much monkey business
Yeah, there's so much monkey business
When there's too many monkeys in the jungle
Yeah, too many monkeys give me trouble

Scoot it, yeah... shoot it
It's so, it's so, it's so easy, baby!

Ooh, ooh yesterday it snowed
I saw the monkey on the road
Monkey sais he's tired
So he gave me half his load

So now I got a monkey on my back
Yeah, monkey's always trouble
Leaving funky monkey tracks
Oh, he's got me tied up
Up in a sack, in a sack

Scoot it, yeah... shoot it
It's so, it's so, it's so easy, baby!

Too much monkey business
Aagh, too much monkey business
Too much monkey business
Oh, there's so much monkey business
When there's too many monkeys in the jungle
Yeah, too many monkeys give me trouble

Too much monkey business
Shady monkey business

Well, monkeys like to shake
And monkeys like to move
Monkey like to kick a little ass when I'm due

Ow, I'd like to take it, I like to kick
I'd like to stick that little monkey, yeah!

Hey, hey, hey, hey!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Starz's song Monkey Business describe the chaos and trouble caused by a monkey on people's lives. The first verse talks about a father who took a chance on the monkey's dance and ended up losing his pants due to the monkey's antics. He has the monkey tied up in a sack but is still struggling to keep up with its mischievous behavior. The chorus repeats the phrase "too much monkey business" and describes the trouble caused by an excess of monkeys in the jungle.

The next verse talks about the monkey kicking the singer's brother in the mouth, causing his head to go north and his teeth to go south. The monkey is causing havoc, and the singer describes how he now has a monkey on his back, leaving funky monkey tracks and tying him up in a sack. The song combines humor with a sense of frustration at the monkey's disruptiveness.

I STUDY Starz first album. It's TOO Good. It's TOO PERFECT.

I am not sure if you who holds the rights to it nowadays understands the Gem you have here.

Sure its derivative, but self consciously so. ("I'm just a rock and roll bandit" ) but it does it better than the Rock that it borrows from. Stones better than the stones. Who Better than the Who. Aerosmith WAY better than Aerosmith. Kiss a billion times better than Kiss. Cold Gin goes from boring and plodding into the epic Live Wire, evoking multiple Bands and Multiple Genres and dozens of older riffs and themes simultaneously.

It makes me really doubt that a little inspiration between Ranno, Lee and the guys could unleash this. Lee wrote these lyrics? Is he the most brilliant lyricist of all time? And beyond lyrics, the Phrasing, is Lee really that Amazing? I can only imagine this stuff being developed like some secret cultural weapon in workshops lead by the best and brightest musical geniuses from the world over, who like super-songrwiters , brilliant youths scouted and asked if they wanted to change the world, and if they did, could they live without recognition for it.

Then like a secret values warfare operation set out to utilize cultural cliches and and themes set up as cues that will light up the brain of the unsuspecting teenager with his headphones on a LA 1976.

Yeah maybe the process can be that magical that Ranno and Lee came up with this stuff while still dealing with all of life's pressures AND paying for their own studio time.

Or this album is the best example (though unfortunately ill-timed) of the effort to swap out old values with new.

Nah thats just crazy.

"Whos talking Values Man, this is just Rock."

Yeah OK, its only rock and roll right?

Lol.

This album is basically perfect.

Perfect.

Starz was one of the best bands in the 1970s. I go 3 vintage vinyls of the first 3 albums, and a couple 45rpm singles.

You need to get Coliseum Rock, their 4th album.
