I Should Have Known
Status Quo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I found out what I wanted, I found out when I needed to
You thought me kind-a-hearted, I heard that when I wanted you
Being wrong isn't easy, right's another way
Being wrong isn't easy, right's another way

A-when you want me, just think like you're ready to
Like me when I want to, why me does it have to be?
Everyone tried to tell me, right's another way
Everyone tried to tell me, right's another way

Trust me to fall apart, trust you to know
Just you and no-one else, just me alone
Why did it have to be? I should have known
Oh I should have known

I can't tell, did you mean it? Did you mean what I think you did?
I won't give less you need it, just a bit could be overhead
I won't wait for a minute, can't hesitate
I won't wait for a minute, can't hesitate

Trust me to fall apart, trust you to know
Just you and no-one else, just me alone

Why did it have to be? I should have known
Oh I should have known

Overall Meaning

In “I Should Have Known,” Status Quo touches on the theme of love gone wrong. The singer found out what he wanted when he needed to, indicating that he had finally found true love. However, it seems that his lover doesn't feel the same way about him. The singer is asking for clarity, wanting to know if his lover meant what they said or not.

Throughout the song, the singer expresses his struggle with accepting the reality that his lover doesn't feel the same way about him. He feels betrayed and wonders why everyone tried to tell him that there was another way to handle the situation. The line “Being wrong isn’t easy, right's another way” suggests that there is no perfect way to handle the situation.

The lyrics “Trust me to fall apart, trust you to know, just you and no one else, just me alone” describe how the singer feels after realizing that his love has gone wrong. He is torn apart and feels isolated, abandoned by everyone that he trusted. He admits that he should have known that this would happen, implying that deep down, he knew something wasn’t right from the start.

Overall, “I Should Have Known” is a song about the pain of lost love and the regret of not seeing the warning signs from the start. It holds an important message that sometimes, it's better to trust your instincts and listen to the advice of others, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.

Rock and rollers gotta love the 'boogie rock' genre, and Status Quo are masters of the craft. To Quo fans, I just discovered SQ in December 2018 and I am blown away by the music and the loyalty of the fans. Cool! I knew Slade in 1974. How'd SQ fly under my radar for so long? I don't know, but they are now in my life and I like it! I like it! I like it! I like it! Another great posting by status quo-all. Please keep up the good work!

A great rocker - among the best tracks from this absolutely average album. They promised to rock hard and would release a masterpiece to their "20th birthday". I was 14 years old when it was released - it was a big disappointment. Although i listened a lot to it back then (had it on tape) it never hit me the way the hard-rockin albums from the 70ies did! I had already changed into the world of heavy metal. BUT: this album is far better than the terrible stuff coming later in the 80ies! Greetings from germany.
