Losing Myself In You
Stephen Bishop Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody grab the highest star
Makes no difference who or what you are
And every song he hears another lullaby

The dog is barking and the sheets are cold
Even the guy out on the street he knows
Love can make or break the heart of any Joe
There's no way I'm gonna make it
No way I'm gonna win
I can almost hear the sad goodbyes
Now what should I do, I'm losing myself in you

There's a palace in the south of France
Where only the lonely people learn to dance
Leave 'em laughing if you got half a chance

Memories make you what you never are
Find your heaven in the corner bar
Then music makes you dream
You're not so far from home

There's no way I'm gonna make it
No way I'm gonna win
I can almost hear the sad goodbyes
Now what should I do, I'm losing myself in you

Now no else could ever do
What you do when you're doing
No, there's nothing to it
No, there's nothing to it
No, there's nothing to it

There's no way I'm gonna
There's no way I can
I can almost hear the sad goodbyes
Now what should I do
I'm losing, losing, losing
I'm losing myself

Never gonna make it
Never gonna win, never
Never gonna make it
Never gonna win, never

Never gonna make it
Never gonna win, never

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Losing Myself in You by Stephen Bishop convey themes of love, vulnerability, uncertainty, and a sense of being lost in one's feelings. The song starts by encouraging people to reach for the highest star, regardless of their identity, indicating that everyone has the potential to achieve greatness. The lyrics then go into an observation about how love can be unpredictable and can affect anybody, regardless of who they are or their circumstances. The song emphasizes that when love is good, it can be magical and bring one's dreams to life, but when it's bad, it can be heartbreaking and make one feel lost.

The second verse of the song shifts to a focus on the idea that memories shape who we are and that we can find comfort in unexpected places like a corner bar. The song speaks of a palace in the south of France where only lonely people learn to dance – this could be a metaphor for how sometimes, people only discover their true selves in moments of solitude or heartbreak. The song highlights that music has the power to make one feel close to home, even when physically far away.

The chorus repeats the central idea that the singer is losing themselves in the person they love, and they have no idea what to do. The sense of being lost in love is a recurring theme in the song, and the repetition of “never gonna make it, never gonna win” amplifies this feeling of uncertainty and vulnerability that comes with falling deeply in love.

1978 ... then of course Michael McDonald's unforgettable voice has to be on backing vocals. I think it was a federal mandate at the time. Hearing his voice for the first time is the concert memory of my life. My wife and I were standing in line outside the sports arena at the U. of Toledo on Sunday April 21, 1974, waiting to see Steely Dan for the first time. It was unusually warm that day so all the arena windows were open as we heard the band inside begin their soundcheck by playing the title track to their latest album "Pretzel Logic." Donald Fagen's voice was clearly recognizable, but when they got to the song's bridge "I stepped up on the platform / The man gave me the news" we heard a voice we knew wasn't Fagen's. Two hours later when they played that song again to a live audience we could put Michael McDonald's face with that incredible voice we had heard earlier through the open windows. He would become the lead backing vocalist on Steely Dan's 1975 album "Katy Lied," before joining The Doobie Brothers later that year when Tom Johnston's stomach ulcer prevented him from touring. The next time we saw Michael was April 1977 when The Doobies played at Bowling Green State U., near the end of their "Takin' It To the Streets" tour. Only the best of the best for Stephen Bishop!

5 1/2 years ago I bought a Victrola (im 39 now, i was 33 back then) on a trip to NYC. And I remembered listening to your music when I was a child on the radio. Im from Argentina. And I bought my victrola and your Careless Vinyl Album as my first one. I wore it out in these 5 years so badly I had to buy another one. And of course I bought Bish but later on. This song just popped in my head today and I just wanted to thank you for your music. Thank You!!! Muchas gracias, tu música me llega a lo profundo!!!
