Thanks for commenting. I couldn't agree more. Stephen Foster was a master of the catchy melody and texbook harmonic structure. When I was a Music student so many things we were taught could be found as examples in Foster's work.

- Stephen Collins Foster was from Pittsburgh PA and lived from 1826 to 1864, sadly dying young. He was from the headwaters of the mighty Ohio River, which would have led him onto paddle wheelers down to the Mississippi and the minstrel culture on board. I lived along the Ohio in Marietta OH and Midland PA from 1939 to 1945, so I have some feel for those ships, the river, and Foster for we sang his songs in those days. Thanks for sharing this bit of Americana !

Thank you for that great insight. It is good to know you have that appreciation having lived in the area. So many people ignore their surroundings and heritage. I do not travel far from home because there is so much to appreciate in my own land. We have Manchester United and City on our doorsteps, Bury celebrates Robert Peel who founded The Police in the UK and Railways first ran from Liverpool to Manchester. Musically we have the Halle Orchestra and in the 1950's we had the Classical school of Harrison Birtwistle, Peter Maxwell Davies, David Ellis and Alexander Goehr. In the Folk tradition Ewan MacColl lived in Salford in his younger days which inspired the song "DIrty Old town" and in more modern times Manchester has it's own popular culture. That said, for some inexplicable reason I have always felt an affinity with the USA and love it's own Musical Heritage from Foster to the Blues. Thanks again for commenting.

Yes I have and that is because when I was 13 I wanted a career in Music. I went onto become a Music teacher for 40 years plus and on retirement turned a career into a hobby i.e youtube. I always listen to this song for it's lively presentation, the funny lyrics and the fast horses who run and jump very gracefully in the video. They are beautiful creatures. Reminds me of my late brother used to go to race tracks and make a bet. Strangely he often wins. When he loses he still smiles and keep talking about this and that horse which names I forgot already. He once bought me a pair of shoes for my college uniform with his winnings. My baby grandson likes the video too. Smiles a lot and claps his hand when we watch it together.

I have always admired big families who learn so much from each other. We had 4 which was normal in the Uk in the 1950's-- 70's although these days many families stop at 2. Music is so important for many different reasons and played a big part in helping my son combat dyslexia. His drumming made a big difference to him.

He should be a healthy and happy baby, might become a good singer too! All my children were exposed to music while in the womb too because that was a doctor's suggestion. I do not regret forcing them to listen to my old folks music and selected modern music because they learned to listen to them or maybe out of respect tolerate my kind of music. All of them could carry a tune. My first daughter was school champion in her grade 6 with bryan Adam's Everything I do, I do it for you. My late brother stopped betting when I told him to stop working and go to school (after I graduated. It was a case of one after the other graduates since our parent could not afford to send us all at the same time. We were 10 children.) He did stop gambling and finished "Forestry" and had many projects planting pine trees in our denuded forests in our province. I do gamble with the lotto. I never won because i do small bets only . (LOL)

Your late brother sounds like a great character. Gambling can be dangerous but it sounds like he was well in control. Only gamble what you can afford to lose is the motto which I keep to when I bet on football games.I only bet on games I can watch because it adds to the excitement and only occasionally. I always put some winnings in the Shops Trust fund when things go well because it reminds me I'm gambling for fun and not to gain wealth. In England our betting shops have a warning saying don't bet when the fun stops. Very good advice I think.
Glad to hear the song is liked by the little one. I'll have to try it out on my Grandson soon. He's only 7 weeks but starting to smile now so he may like a sing song.He has already heard lots of music and went to a Green day concert while in the womb. He kicked along to that(LOL)

Camp Fire sing songs are another source of hearing songs and if course for the younger generation we have the internet which has been a great opportunity for everybody to self publish both original and well known songs not to mention the obscure. Thanks for listening in. it is certainly a well-established song. Some of Foster's songs contain lyrics which were considered racist. All my versions are cleaned up and very PC. Fosters statue was recently taken down because of his lyrics although they were written at a particular time in History and times have changed for the better. That said I do think some areas of political correctness have got out of hand such as the decline in the word Christmas with some trying to call it a winterval. Hope you like Oh Susanna.

If you are based in the Uk I already have a playlist for Traditional Folksongs many of which are popular in The care Homes. My American playlist features songs of Stephen Foster and other American Folksongs which are also popular in the Uk. I have also created a small but expanding sing it yourself playlist so for those who would prefer no lead vocal that may be useful. Hope they enjoy singing along and thank you for including one of my efforts. Oh yes, I also have a Christmas and seasonal playlist. Please note I also edit some songs to keep them socially acceptable if you know where i'm coming from. Please note also that the majority of my uploads include the Lyrics
which of course makes singing along easier.

Adamson no its no fluke he was extremely talented and was at the right time (that was his luck) its more tragic how he died..,trying to step up his game to higher standards and failing commercially. Bad luck running into civil war...so many people were ruined and or committed suicide. Then he just became a statistic. @g b Thanks for getting back and an Interesting comment about the flexibility of the melody. During my teacher training we studied a Book by Annie Warburton (a standard school author at the time) and everything in the book pointed to How Stephen Foster composed his tunes. His melodies have always had a textbook mark on them and I often used Camptown races and Oh Susanna in my teaching. The Flexibility and structure allows different harmonies to be inserted which is not always the case with standard Folky style melodies. Foster wrote some other lesser known works which were Higher end in Music terms which suggests to me that what he composed was no fluke. It is such a shame that the Political correctness issues (and rightly so in modern context) are starting to overshadow his subtle genius.

A few years ago I was hammered for my version of "The Angel Gabriel from Heaven came" getting more dislikes than likes. I re-recorded it at a slower pace and things improved so sometimes criticism can be helpful.

I was searching YT for more songs of the old South and was surprised to find so many orientals who were performing these songs. I guess it's natural, as I enjoy Oriental music. I just think it's ironic that much of our music that is considered racist is enjoyed by other nations and cultures. I guess, like me, they listen to the music and not the supposed negative sides of a story's song.

@Erick Contreras Yes it has changed a lot. I met Giant Haystacks years ago. He used to go to our Church and the priest introduced me to him. A great Claim To Fame but many years later i was asked to give his widow Guitar lessons. That didn't go as well as I would have liked but it was nice visiting the House and hearing the stories. She even showed me a 7" 45 r.p.m. record he'd made years ago which was a successful venture.I wasn't into wrestling that much but that got my interest in that particular time. His rival was Big Daddy but they were good friends out of the ring. I also remember Billy two Rivers who used to do a war dance when he scored a point or two. It was full of chracters back then. I lost interest in popular Music in the 80's although appreciate it alot more now while by the 90's I had a teenage daughter so found myself going to Boyzone and later McFly concerts. I told her McFly would be massive when we first saw them supporting Busted. Got that one right I appeared in Smash hits as their oldest fan and met them at a signing.They recognised me from the Smash hits article.

Thanks Erick. That is the very reason I called my albums "Keeping The Old Songs Alive". It is not just for Nostalgia, but also to let the younger people know what quality songs existed before the unstructured repetitive Music that we often hear nowadays. My Father used to criticise my generation of popular music and always said his stuff would last. I have to say he was right to a point, except my stuff has also stood the test of time. e.g The Beatles., The Who , Kinks, Queen etc Time will tell if the modern popular songs will still be with us in 50 years time, I am sure some will.

One aspect of his compositions often overlooked is his Quadrilles and similar well structured harmonic pieces which were of a very high musical standard. His songs were also textbook examples of melodic structure. A great mind indeed. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks .It certainly is catchy and I think that was the reason Stephen Foster was so successful. He used basic simple chord structures making it easy for people to play themselves but added those catchy tunes on top which is not easy for every one to do. he was also adept at more serious pieces which employed more complexities such as hi Quadrilles.

I think Bay is to do with its colour - Reddish and /orBrown I believe with some black somewhere on its main. Not heard of the Grey line but probably true as people made it up if they were at the races and a Grey horse was on the list. Thanks for commenting.

My 4th and last child is named Arnold and he likes their present day music. I have manage to make them listen to the songs of yester years because only old / classical music are played in the house every Saturday and Gospel music on Sundays. They can play there own music Monday to Friday because I am not there to complain about all the cacophony of sounds - loud and shearing to the ears. They have no choice at first but now they learned to appreciate my kind of music.

Thanks for the comment. Quite a lot of people are listening to this in 2020. Based on my you tube analytics it had roughly over 300 in the last 48 hours and 11 in the last 60 minutes.. Along with "They Built The Ship Titanic" and "We're Bound for Botany Bay" it has been one of my most successful you tube songs. Good songs stand the test of time and never go away. What determines a good song ? Structure, Form, Melody, Lyrics. It could be any or all but I personally would judge it on popularity, which is often difficult to evaluate. Aesthetics are a wonderful thing.

Thanks for this insight into Stephen Foster.. Ove him or hate him, he certainly left his mark on the world. As for out of tune Piano's I often opt for those when the Music demands it. Even digital Piano's which don't need tuning have the out of tune option.

Thanks for that but I would be very surprised if it did. It is a well established song about Horse Racing.
Some of Foster's songs are not politically correct but I cannot see why this one would cause offence.If I'm missing something please enlighten me.

So google says G'wine is Archaic African American Vernacular? I don't understand the definition or usage. This is up there with Big Rock Candy Mountain for sure. Funny a song that every little kid in America knows and can sing part of is at least in part about betting on horses lol

Thanks for commenting. I can see the connection in language between 'G'wine' and 'G-oin' into going but agree totally with you in the anomaly of the betting connection and a song played in schools. As a teacher who sang it regularly in that capacity that aspect never occurred to me in the same way that Elizabethan Madrigals had content that was certainly inappropriate for the secondary school sector here in the UK and yet we all happily sang them without question

Thanks for asking. No I don't use auto tune at all. There is a danger that Music becomes too sanitised and loses it's natural feel. I record all my songs with String Instruments and multi keyboards. The Only cheating I do is arranger keyboard accompaniments which I use to replace a band. Everything is recorded in a small home studio on a Zoom R24 Multitrack. I sometimes use a computer for refining the end product for EQ etc but definately not autotune. That said, this was an earlier recording which used a Zoom 1266 which I replaced after I ran it into the ground. I'll take the question as a compliment unless you thought autotune wasn't working LOL.

@madbear3512 There may be a slight variation changing "de" to "The" which is a modernisation. I left gwine in instead of Going as I felt it maintained some authenticity but overall I don't think it has changed much. I love Stephen Foster's work but some of the period language is now inappropriate. If you want the more racist versions there are quite a few on youtube with no holes barred but that is not my way of doing things. Mine were generally based on this version.
