When you're gone
And I can't pretend
That I know when
Our love started to go wrong
I know we planned to stay together
We just ran in to stormy weather
(Couldn't see the dark clouds in the sky)
But I had no way of knowing
And I don't know where I'm going
But I'm movin' on
We talked it over
We've said it all
Well who could say
It would be this way
But the writing's on the wall
And now the sun is finally setting
This is where the story ends
We didn't count upon a rainy day
(Didn't count upon a rainy day)
But I had no way of knowing
And I don't know where I'm going
But I'm movin' on
I'm movin' on
I'm movin' on
I know we planned to stay together
We just ran into stormy weather
We couldn't see the dark clouds in the sky
(Couldn't see the dark clouds in the sky)
But I had no way of knowing
And I don't know where I'm going
But I'm movin' on
Repeat to fade
The lyrics of "Movin' On" by Steps express the feelings of a person who misses their loved one but acknowledges that their relationship did not work out. The opening lines, "You know I miss you / When you're gone," reveal the longing and the pain experienced after a relationship ends. The singer admits that they do not know when their love began to fall apart but acknowledge that it did. They grapple with the reality that despite having planned to stay together, unexpected challenges – "stormy weather" – prevented them from sustaining their relationship.
The lyrics' metaphor of dark clouds in the sky emphasizes the uncertainty and confusion surrounding the disintegration of the relationship. While they seemed blinded by the problems, they could not see the warning signs, and now they face an uncertain future alone. The lyrics repeat the line, "But I'm movin' on," signifying the singer's determination to let go of the past and keep moving forward.
Overall, the song expresses the universal emotions that come with the end of a relationship, including heartache, confusion, and the need to carry on. The lyrics focus on the idea that even when one can't forget their feelings, it is essential to leave the past behind and move forward.
