What We Started
Steve Aoki Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Breakin' every rule they made
I'll never change what we've done
It made us who we are today
I'm takin' every chance I get
To make us who you won't forget
Who we are, who we are
This is what we started
This is what we started
They can't hold us down
They'll never be, never be
Never be, never be us
This is what we started
Remember we used to run
To the corner of '69
Yeah they would come chasin' us
We found a new place to hide
Our makin' out plans to brake out
Give me your hand and then
They will know who we are
This is what we started
This is what we started
They can't hold us down
They'll never be, never be us
Never be, never be us
This is what we started
It's everything that we ever wanted
They won't hold us back
They'll never be, never be us
Never be, never be us
(This is what we started)
(It's everything that we ever wanted)
The lyrics to Steve Aoki's song "What We Started" are quite nostalgic, taking the listener back to their youthful days when they were rebellious, young and full of life. The first verse speaks of the times when they were young - breaking every rule that was made, and how those moments have made them who they are today, implying that they enjoyed the recklessness and freedom, and wouldn't change a thing. The second verse reminisces about when they used to run to the corner of '69 and found a new place to hide, away from the people who were chasing them, determined to uphold their freedom and show their authentic identities, without any fear of being judged or held back.
Throughout the chorus, Aoki exhorts that this is what we (he and his friends or listeners in general) started and that nobody can hold them down or take away their experiences or identity. He insists that they'll never change who they are as they continue to make memories, cherishing them and the people they make them with. Aoki suggests that they have never-ending opportunities to live their lives to the fullest, to create more memories and to make an impact on the world, and that it all started with the experiences they had when they were young.
In conclusion, the lyrics to "What We Started" are essentially an ode to self-discovery, defiance, and living life to the fullest. They remind the listener that the experiences they had in their youth shape the people they become in adulthood and that they should cherish those memories and use that sense of freedom and recklessness to create new memories worth cherishing in the present.
