Brand New
Steve Hackett Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Through the fall
The year is ending
I see it all
All the things I lack
The sunshine's coming back
Turn my grey sky blue
You make me feel brand new
A shrine to love
Never ending
From above
The lyrics of Steve Hackett's song "Brand New" reflect on the changing of seasons and the end of another year. The first two lines capture the transition from autumn to winter, referencing the impending cold and darkness. From there, the song takes on a slightly more positive tone. The singer reflects on the things they feel they lack, but then the promise of returning sunshine seems to lift their spirits. The line "you make me feel brand new" is a direct reference to someone who has a positive effect on the singer's life. They feel renewed and energized because of this person's presence.
The second half of the song shifts away from the changing seasons and instead focuses on the moon as a "shrine to love." The imagery here is somewhat abstract, but it seems to convey a sense of something eternal and unchanging. The moon, like love, is always present and always there to provide comfort and inspiration from above.
Overall, the lyrics of "Brand New" are open-ended and somewhat ambiguous, but they convey a sense of hopefulness and renewal that is fitting for the end of a year and the beginning of a new one.
