The Christmas Song
Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.
And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you!
The Christmas Song by Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme is a classic holiday song that conveys the warm, fuzzy feeling that Christmas brings through its beautiful imagery and festive tone. The opening line, "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire," sets the scene of a cozy Christmas evening with loved ones by the fire. The next line, "Jack Frost nipping at your nose," evokes the chilly winter air and the excitement of being outside in the snow. The third line mentions "Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir," which paints a picture of joyful people singing traditional Christmas songs.
The following line, "And folks dressed up like Eskimos," shows the fun and playful spirit of the season, where people wear silly outfits to celebrate. The second verse mentions more familiar Christmas elements such as a turkey, mistletoe, and excited children who have a hard time falling asleep because they know Santa is coming to bring presents. The line, "And every mother's child is gonna spy," conjures up images of kids secretly peeking out their windows to see if they can spot flying reindeer in the night sky.

I lost both of my parents this last October....just nine days apart. I’m 54 and I remember as a young girl (at least when I was as young as 5 or 6) having my parents play this album. To this day, this is my all time favorite Christmas album. I’ll play it over and over during the season. I’m listening to this album while I’m hanging lights and trying not to fall apart. Thank you Steve and Eydie for giving me so many wonderful memories with my family!
Sparky's Mom
Lost my mother this October very suddenly. I grew up on Steve and Eydie. I just turned 59. The holidays wouldn't be the holidays without these two. I'm sorry for your loss. It's hard. I will keep you in my prayers.

It never seems to get easier. My dad passed 21 years ago and now with every little thing I wonder if mom's next and I'm scared about how lonely it'll be and I'm 57. I find myself mentally recording everything. Getting old sucks.
