Steve Miller (born 5 October 1943) is a blues and rock and roll guitarist and performer. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but attended high school in Dallas. While at St. Mark's School of Texas, he formed his first band, The Marksmen. Miller taught one of his classmates, Royce Boz Scaggs, a few guitar chords so that he could join the band; Scaggs became better known by his nickname, Boz. Miller attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison during the 1960s, where he formed The Ardells. Scaggs joined the Ardells the next year. Ben Sidran was added to the Ardells as a keyboardist the following year.
In 1968, Miller formed the Steve Miller Band, with Scaggs handling vocals, and released an album, Children of the Future, the first in a series of discs rooted solidly in the psychedelic blues style that dominated the San Francisco music scene at the time. Scaggs would leave the band after a couple of albums with vocal chores taken over by drummer Tim Davis; Miller himself would begin singing occasional lead on 1969's Brave New World. These albums performed respectably on the album charts but failed to yield a hit.
In the 1970's the band had some hits that became classics over the years - Jet Airliner, with some evocative lyrics that brought home the loss of life on the road; and The Joker which includes the famous line about the "pompatus of love", which is of course nonsense, but that didn't stop a lot of stoned folks from spending years talking amongst themselves.
Steve Miller's father was a wealthy doctor in Dallas, and friends with famous guitarist and guitar designer Les Paul. Les Paul gave Miller his first guitar lessons.
Longtime member Norton Buffalo (harmonica player) died from lung cancer on October 30, 2009.
John King (drummer during "The Joker" era) died after a short bout of kidney cancer on October 26, 2010.
Band-member James Cooke died from cancer on 16 May 2011.

And I'm tryin' to find a job
But it just keeps gettin' tougher every day
But I got to do my part cause I know in my heart
I got to please my sweet baby, yeah
Well, I ain't superstitious
And I don't get suspicious
And I know that it's true that all the things that I do
Will come back to me in my sweet time
So keep on rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
I went from Phoenix, Arizona
All the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California where the girls are warm
So I could be with my sweet baby, yeah
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Baby, baby, baby
Keep on rockin'
Rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin'
Rockin' me baby
Don't get suspicious
Now don't be suspicious
Babe, you know you are a friend of mine
And you know that it's true
That all the things that I do
Are gonna come back to you in your sweet time
I went from Phoenix, Arizona
All the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California where the girls are warm
So I could hear my sweet baby say
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me, rockin' me, rockin'
Baby, baby, baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
The lyrics to Steve Miller Band's "Rockin' Me" speak about a man who is struggling to find employment, but he's aware of his responsibilities to provide for his partner. He's willing to go to great lengths to ensure that his lover is pleased and taken care of, even if it means going on a journey to reach her. The singer is not a superstitious person, but he acknowledges that the actions he takes will have consequences, and it's important that he stays true to his word to keep his partner happy. The song is an ode to commitment and fulfilling one's responsibilities.
The lines "I went from Phoenix, Arizona all the way to Tacoma / Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A. / Northern California where the girls are warm" illustrate a snapshot of the singer's journey to his lover. This song explores the longing of people who have been separated by distance and the lengths to which they will go to reunite. The repeated refrain "Keep on a rockin' me baby" not only serves as a catchy hook, but it also emphasizes the singer's appreciation for his partner and the happiness that being with her brings him.
Overall, "Rockin' Me" is a light-hearted, upbeat love song about devotion and the lengths people go to keep their loved ones happy. The song's catchy rhythm, simple lyrics, and bluesy guitar riffs make it an enduring classic that stands the test of time.

This is what us American kids grew up with in the 70's. No internet, no smartphones. Just an AM radio.

It's a shame really. In this advanced day and age, it's so easy to imagine the 70s as a boring decade.
