Cold Shot
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once was a sweet thang baby, held out love in our hands
Now I reach to kiss your lips the touch don't mean a thing
And that's a cold shot baby, yeah that's a drag
A cold shot baby, I let our love go bad

Remember the way that you loved me, do anything I said
Now I see you out somewhere you won't give me the time of day
And that's a cold shot darlin', yeah that's a drag
And that's a cold shot baby, we let our love go bad

I really meant I was sorry, for ever causin' you pain
You showed your appreciation by walkin' out anyway
And that's a cold shot baby, yeah that's a drag
And that's a cold shot baby, we let our love go bad

So sad, too bad, so sad
Don't let our true love run cold baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Stevie Ray Vaughan's song Cold Shot are a reflection of lost love and the pain of realizing what has been lost. The song starts with the singer remembering how beautiful their love was and how it was once held in their hands. The use of the phrase "sweet thang" is nostalgic and helps to emphasize how hopeless the singer now feels about their relationship. When they reach to kiss their partner, they can sense that the love is gone and the touch no longer means anything. The phrase "cold shot" reflects the coldness of the partner's response and how the singer must face the truth that their love has gone bad.

Vaughan then continues to describe the memories of how their partner once loved them and did anything they said. However, when the singer sees them now, they won't even give them the time of the day. The repetition of the phrase "cold shot" in the chorus further emphasizes the coldness and distance between them. The singer admits that maybe they were at fault and apologizes, but it is too late as their partner has already left them. The song ends on a melancholy note with the phrase "don't let our true love run cold baby," suggesting that the love was true but still ended up slipping away.

Overall, the lyrics of Cold Shot paint a vivid picture of a once-beautiful love that has met its untimely end. Vaughan's use of evocative phrases and repetition helps to emphasize the coldness and pain that the singer feels.

I worked at Mars Music in Dallas and SRV had just died. My buddy Chris in the warehouse said Jack you like blues would you like to see SRV's Guitar. I said sure. I opened the case and it was this Hamilton strat that was in this video. I took it out of the case and played it for 15 minutes. Respectfully wiped it down . closed the case and the next day it was shipped to Billy Gibbons in Houston. For years I wondered about that guitar until I saw this video. I was like Man! That was the guitar I Played. RIP SRV. Peace Truth.and Love Jc

GOOD for you, John. What an honor. SRV turned his life around there toward the end. I sincerely hope that included a personal relationship with Jesus ...

Yeah, what a loss that was brother. Maybe you should try and play live again. I would if I could, but I lost my middle finger on my fret hand so I can't.
