Can't Stand Losing You
Sting Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I guess it's all true what your girlfriends say
That you don't ever want to see me again
And your brother's gonna kill me and he's six feet ten
I guess you'd call it cowardice
But I'm not prepared to go on like this
I can't, I can't
I can't stand losing you
I see you've sent my letters back
And my LP records and they're all scratched
I can't see the point in another day
When nobody listens to a word I say
You can call it lack of confidence
But to carry on living doesn't make no sense
I can't, I can't
I can't stand losing
I guess this is our last goodbye
And you don't care so I won't cry
But you'll be sorry when I'm dead
And all this guilt will be on your head
I guess you'd call it suicide
But I'm too full to swallow my pride
I can't, I can't
I can't stand losing
I can't stand losing you
Sting's song "Can't Stand Losing You" tells a poignant tale of a man who is consumed by his feelings of rejection and loss after being rejected by his lover. The first verse sets up the scene, with the singer acknowledging that he has been trying to reach out to his former partner repeatedly and has been met with silence. He acknowledges that his ex-girlfriend's friends have confirmed that she no longer wants to see him and that her brother is so angry with him that he may enact physical violence. The singer is paralyzed by fear, trapped in a cycle of desperation, anxiety, and heartbreak. He admits to feeling like a coward, yet his frustration won't let him give up hope.
In the second verse, the singer goes through a series of losses that he has experienced since the breakup, indicating that he has given his all to the relationship. The letters and records he sent her come back in a box with scratches. It symbolizes how she has even gone back to tamper with their memories, damaging parts of what was once a beautiful connection. He feels hopeless, forlorn, and dejected. His situation only worsens as no one wants to listen to his pain anymore.
In the final verse, the singer coalesces his experiences with the idea of finality. He accepts that the relationship is over, and they will not be reconciling. He tells her that he won't cry as she does not care anymore. He shifts the conversation to his demise, suggesting that she will feel guilty when he is gone. "I guess you'll call it suicide", he sings, "but I'm too full to swallow my pride." He realizes that he is hurting himself more by holding on to a relationship that ended. In the end, the singer is still the loser, but he is also searching for meaning and hope at the same time.
