The band consists of vocalist Dan Marsala, lead guitarist Ryan Phillips, rhythm guitarist and back up vocalist Philip Sneed, bassist Adam Russell and drummer Josh Wills. Initially named Big Blue Monkey, they changed their name to Story of the Year in 2002 because a blues group of the same name had already existed.
It would not be until eight years after forming that Story of the Year saw its first piece of commercial success in its major label debut, Page Avenue, containing the popular singles "Until the Day I Die" and "Anthem of Our Dying Day". A second album, In the Wake of Determination, followed in 2005, but did not achieve the success of its predecessor. The band has returned with their third album The Black Swan, their first on Epitaph Records, which was released on April 22, 2008.
The band toured with Linkin Park on the Meteora World Tour in 2004 along with P.O.D. and Hoobastank.
The band's fourth, The Constant, was released on February 16, 2010 through Epitaph Records.
On March 8, 2013 it was announced that the band are planning on a world tour.

Story of the Year Lyrics

Walking example of you
Wait for the silence
Talking backwards to you
It meant nothing to me
Watching the world fall on you
I'm keeping my eyes closed
Now I can see what this means to you
This wasted so many nights and again
I've wasted so much time on a friend
Too young, too proud to understand
So this is the end
Perfect timing for you
You'll run 'til your legs break
So here's my reminder of you
It meant nothing to me
This wasted so many nights and again
I've wasted so much time on a friend
Too young, too proud to understand
So this is the end, go!
We should've seen this coming
We should've seen this
Yeah! Yeah!
This wasted so many nights and again
I've wasted so much time on a friend
Too young, too proud to understand
So this is the end
This wasted so many nights and again
I've wasted so much time on a friend
Too young, too proud to understand
So this is the end
Yeah! This is the end!
The lyrics to Story of the Year's song "Razorblades" express the feelings of betrayal and disappointment after having had a friendship come to an end. The singer is addressing their former friend, whom they describe as a walking example of themselves. They had a conversation (possibly an argument) that meant nothing to the singer, and they watched the world fall on their friend. The singer admits to having wasted too much time on this friend, and though they should have seen the end coming, it still hurts nonetheless. The friend is encouraged to run until their legs break, and the singer delivers a reminder that their friendship meant nothing to them in the end.
The lyrics convey a sense of bitterness, regret, and a feeling of being done with the situation. The singer acknowledges that they were too young and proud to understand what was happening or to handle the situation better. The repetition of the phrase "This wasted so many nights and again, I've wasted so much time on a friend," emphasizes the sense of frustration and wasted effort that came with the friendship.
Interestingly, the repetitive structure of the song's lyrics featuring the same phrases repeated throughout reiterates the frustration that comes with wasted time and missed opportunities. The song is also notable for its use of heavy guitar and a fast-paced tempo, which adds to the overall sense of frustration and anger conveyed in the lyrics.
