Winter Wonderland
Stryper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sleigh bells ring
Are you listening
In the lane
Snow is glistening
A beautiful sight
We're happy tonight
Walking in a winter wonderland
Gone away is the bluebird
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song
As we go along
Walking in a winter wonderland
In the meadow we can build a snowman
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown
He'll say: Are you married?
We'll say: No man
But you can do the job when you're in town
Later on we'll conspire
As we dream by the fire
To face unafraid

The plans that we've made
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Overall Meaning

In Stryper's adaptation of the classic Winter Wonderland, they paint a picture of a beautiful winter landscape with snow covering the ground and the air filled with the sound of sleigh bells ringing. The Bluebird, symbolic of happiness and joy, has gone away, and a new bird has taken its place, singing love songs as they walk in this winter wonderland. The new bird represents a fresh start and new beginnings, as well as the idea of moving on from the past.

In the middle of the picturesque setting, there is a reference to building a snowman, and pretending it is Parson Brown. Parson Brown is a fictional character that is often referenced in Christmas songs, representing someone who can marry couples. The lyrics then go on to say that they are not married, but imply that the snowman in place of Parson Brown is significant in some way.

Later on, they "conspire" around the fire and face the plans that they have made. This could represent reflecting on a past year and setting plans for a better one ahead. The overall feeling of the song is one of warmth, comfort, and hope. It is a reminder that even in the middle of winter, there is magic and beauty to be found.

I had this single on cassette back when it came out. I was in high school. This has become a “must listen to” classic and is permanently in my Christmas music rotation and played often during the season. Even my mom liked this version and she wasn’t at all into Rock music of that time.

Awesome metal. Great for your Mom. Thanks for sharing that.

I have a warped picture disc of this song, with Reason for the Season on the other side. Found it at a thrift store for a couple bucks. After setting some heavy stuff on top of it for a while, it's at least playable. Glad to know it's on YT.

I bought this very single (same cover as the 'title picture') that year.  I still play it every Christmas.  Now a classic in its own right! :-)
