Needle Hits E
Sugar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Been selling it short
I'm seeing sunlight for the very first time
And I'm changing my ways
Hanging out on the roof in the rain

The tragic comedy
I hit the station as the needle hits E
The needle hits E
Fill it up and take another twenty

You're living in desperation
Half the time you don't even know
I'm hanging out your frustration
On the laundry line
Hang you out to dry

You drag it around
You got a bone in front of your face
And you're dragging me down
I feel for you when I feel out of place

It doesn't bother me
I hit the station as the needle hits E
The needle hits E
You're running out 'cause you're running on me

Somebody should tell your mother
All the things you're carting around
Stop kicking the wall, my brother
Have you lost your mind?
All you do is watch the tank run dry

Been living it large
Fill it up and gimme the wheel
And I cherish the day
When you say the things that you feel

Your storm is over now
I hit the station as the needle hits E E E
The needle hits E

Empty empty empty empty empty

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sugar's song Needle Hits E are about someone who is experiencing a sudden shift in their life, going from feeling like they have been "selling it short" to seeing "sunlight for the very first time". This person is "changing [their] ways" and "hanging out on the roof in the rain", trying to find a new way to experience things.

The lyrics also paint a picture of two people who are dealing with their own struggles. One is living in desperation and frustration, trying to find a way to move forward, while the other sympathizes with them but also tries to break free from their hold. The chorus of the song repeats the line "I hit the station as the needle hits E", suggesting that the character is using some kind of substance to help them cope with their problems.

The verse "Been living it large / Fill it up and gimme the wheel" suggests that the singer is ready to take charge of their own life, and wants to be the one in control. However, they are also aware of the struggles that others are going through, including "losing their mind" and "watching the tank run dry". The repeated "empty empty empty" at the end of the song suggests that even though some things are changing, there is still a sense of emptiness that remains.

It's still amazing that Bob Mould kept this song off Copper Blue.  He could have just expanded the record to 11 songs or had this as a bonus track on the CD and/or cassette versions (not an uncommon practice back in the early 1990s).

Yeah, it sounds more like a FUEL song. -edit after bathroom break ("Needle Hits 'E'" even fits with the "Easy Listening" acronym.)

Jack D

I don't think it would really help the flow of the album "Copper Blue" though. To me this song would have fit perfectly on "File Under Easy Listening".

Ben Grimshaw

Easily my SECOND fav sugar song after TILTED. The guitar solo in that gets me every time and has done since 1993.

I haven't listened to this in years. Bob is still one of my favorites.
