"Superstar" DJ Keoki a.k.a "The Bad Boy of Techno", "The It Boy", "That Fuc… Read Full Bio ↴"Superstar" DJ Keoki a.k.a "The Bad Boy of Techno", "The It Boy", "That Fucker DJ", "The Pied Piper", "The Mixmaster", and "The God of Techno" (born October 22, 1966, Keoki Franconi) is an Acid House DJ who was born in El Salvador, and raised in Maui. Ran away from home at 16, arriving on the mainland with forty records, a bag full of clothes and $200 in his pocket.

In New York he worked as a baggage handler for TWA and moonlighted as a busboy at Danceteria, in Manhattan. Keoki says he way blown away by the DJ's ability to make a connection with the crowd and began to play records, putting his own distinctive spin on other artists' music. Flamboyant as hell, he dubbed himself "Superstar DJ" Keoki. "I wore a jeweled crown, big furry collars and gold chains," he recalls with a laugh. "It was a gimmick, but the fun of it really caught fire".

He had a very successful career during the 1990s and 2000s as Superstar DJ Keoki, releasing 14 CDs over that decade. He still performs to this day, dressing extravagantly, wearing makeup, and sporting a number of tattoos. And is currently touring with three other DJs on the Club Party Monster Tour, a tribute to both the Party Monster movie as well as a nod to the Club Kid scene that shot him into stardom.

@Kunimitsu 1976 Everything in NYC began dying shortly after Giuliani took office. But, by that time, it became less about the music and more about the drugs which caused me to nope out of it all together.

If you were to check out the movie, Kids, which came out in 1995, that will give you the best understanding how everything was unfolding (degenerating) in NYC at that time, and why it died.

Also, if you were to check out the movie, Bad Lieutenant, you'll find a scene from the Limelight when it was at its peak.

Still, at its height, those nights at the Limelight along with Frankie Bones STORM raves, NASA at the Shelter, going to Liquid Sky and buying mix tapes by DJ DB remain among the best memories of my life and I am happy to have experienced them.

In the near future I will be posting mix tapes from that era, to keep the memory going.

I'll always remember Seattle . SeaTac lost his vital and he had to go
to buy records to perform live in two hours. We went to Broadway and two hours later Keoki performed I think better than any other show that I had ever seen before.

Saw him live years ago. People were throwing shirts at him to autograph while he was spinning, he would sign them and throw them back in the crowd, I had a shirt with a character that look like him, when I threw mine up to get signed he held it up in front of everyone and everyone cheered, and then he kept it. You know what someone should do...they should get a bunch of these old school DJs together and have a party where they can only play records. You know these guys don't throw out their vinyl. Dj Dan, RITM, Icey, Feelgood, Scott Henry, 7up, Rob Riddum, Kos, Dara, Ak1200, Digweed, Shadow, Dieselboy and many more. Outside or in a warehouse, not so many fuckin lights and of course the shit won't be during the day. Djarum's, Vicks and ecstasy. Oh well... It's nice to dream. I DJ’d a lollpalooza after party called the enit festival or something like that. In Phoenix in ‘92 I think. It was a 5 room party at a huge underground venue called the Icehouse. Keoki DJ’d that night too. It surprised me how unprofessional he was. He had to borrow a DJ friend of mine’s (Inertia) headphones and almost didn’t return them. Keoki played his set and I was sadly unimpressed. I expected great things from him. He spent a large part of the night with porn star Tracy Lords who was supposedly a celebrity DJ but she was awful. Keoki was with her during her whole set “teaching” her what to do. I wonder if he got laid. Seeing that this festival was Perry Farrel’s thing I kinda expected more from someone who’s mix CDs I really enjoyed. Oh well I had a blast during my set. I opened in the big room and within an hour it was packed. My friends told me I had drawn almost everyone from all the other areas in there while I played 😁

@Mitch Minimal Keoki had put down his larger than life heroin habit and moved onto a rather large ecstasy habit. While you were unimpressed with his unprofessionalism, I always found myself quite impressed with the amount of pills 💊he could injest before he spun at a show!! Now I am not trying to promote any kind of drug habit or anything like that, I'm just trying to keep it 💯real! I mean it is what it is and it was like 100 years ago!!! 🤷
I believe that if I have my facts correct, this still remains to be the highest selling techno album of all time to this day. Even with all of the talented DJ's that are out there today putting out remarkably visionary, advanced beats, for this album to still keep that record is nothing short of amazing (to me). I think that the reason why it became so popular and has held onto that popularity even what? 26 years later? (WOW!!!) is because this album is the most successful at actually taking you through your roll from dose to peak to come down perfectly!! Like I said before, I'm really not trying to promote any drug use but the reality is that E was a huge part of that culture, especially in 1995!
I apologize for rambling on and on... I guess I just felt something about that!! Whew!! Thank you for listening to me!

Keoki, and more specifically, this album, was my introduction into the “scene”. What a wild ride. Wouldn’t change it for anything . This brings back MEMORIES! Haven’t listened to this in quite awhile. It feels like I never left in a lot of ways.

Fun fact…it was not until YEARS later when I took a deep dive into the Micheal alig story (and by association, dj keoki), that I even knew about his connection to that whole thing!

They were some great times. The memories of Limelight will be with me forever. There was no other club on the planet like it. It was a free for all and innovative times. Ecstasy was a club drug and not mainstream, the atmosphere of the entire place was amazing. Different rooms, different dj's upstairs and down with Keoki spinning in the Main Room on Wednesday nights. The place was always packed right smack in the middle of the work week. Incredible

Wow! Disco 2000?!! Those must have been some crazy parties, with the Club Kids and all that other crazy shit going down at the Limelight. Me and a buddy of mine talked about going on a road trip to The Limelight or Tunnel sometime around 1997 or 1998 (We lived in the D.C. area). But, we never got around to it, kind of wish we did. But, in retrospect, I guess by this time, the NY club scene was nothing like it was a few years before that and if I understand my history correctly here, this is because this was around the time Adolf, I mean Rudolph Giuliani was on a full scale campaign of sticking his pig snout in everyone's business. Then again, I could be wrong about that, I wasn't there and I can only trust stuff I that I read online at arm's length at best, but that is my understanding of it anyway. But still, I wish made the trip anyway. It's cool though, went to some amazing parties at Buzz on Friday nights, definitely was my happy place. :-) Even so, the NY club scene in the 90's has been a source of curiosity and fascination for me for many years now, love reading or hearing about all the experiences from those who were there.Thanks for posting this CD, one of my first and brings back many memories for me. @Karma of Dove Also sucks never being able to find certain ones. I've had mixtapes and burned CDs off Limewire that I had no idea who the producer was, and had to let the track die with the tape/cd. I have given up before, and suddenly stumble upon it. Usually it was with Moonshine records, but they always had the tracks listed, I actually stumbled onto a Salt Tank track, and right away remembered drivng across the country blasting it.

When the trance / east coast rave was at it’s best. Limelight during this time was absolutely insane.. Allot of acid going around on top of ‘everything else’ - LOl. As everyone in these comments are saying, the kids these days hv no fucking idea. Keoki was the Syd Barrett of that scene and we all loved him and the sort of set that he’d fucking nail occasionally despite all the nuttiness there is perfectly encapsulated here. Love it.

I remember giving my first shitty light show with glow sticks to this CD, the first time i tripped on acid it was me my brother tori and our friend jerry bear. Jerry got me my first suger cube and he asked my older brother if he could give it to me as long as he looked out for me..he said yes and it was a hell of a night. Got lost in Walmart in Jax fla on 103rd st. Saw dragon scales on my floor, saw my arm turn into a 🐍, tasted the color purple lol..heard shapes, and felt sounds.
