Easy Does It
Supertramp Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And if my heart's had wings,
I'd be the bird that sings,
I'd fly where love isn't shy
And everyone is willing to try.
And if we had the time,
And time's so hard to find,
I can't believe what you say,
Start sending those shadows away,
And if you know who you are,
You are your own superstar,
And only you can shape the movie that you make,
So when the lights disappear;
And only the silence disappears,
And only the silence is near,
Watch yourself; easy does it, easy while you wait.

And if you know who you are,
You are your own superstar
And only you can shape the music that you make.
So when the crowds disappear,

And only the silence is here
Watch yourself, easy does it, easy does it, easy while you wait.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Supertramp's "Easy Does It" speak to the idea of finding oneself and the importance of taking things slow in the process. The first stanza alludes to the desire to be free like a bird who sings and flies without inhibition. The lines "I'd fly where love isn't shy/ And everyone is willing to try" suggest that the singer seeks a place of openness and vulnerability, where love is not hindered by fear or reservation. However, the second half of the verse acknowledges that finding this kind of environment may be difficult - "And if we had the time/ And time's so hard to find/ I can't believe what you say/ Start sending those shadows away." The singer yearns for a place free of doubt and darkness, and ultimately concludes that it is up to each individual to shape their own reality - "And if you know who you are/ You are your own superstar/ And only you can shape the movie that you make." The chorus repeats this message, encouraging listeners to take their time in self-discovery and to remove any obstacles in their path.

The second verse mirrors the first, but replaces the metaphor of the bird with that of a music artist. "And only you can shape the music that you make" highlights the importance of individuality in the creative process, and acknowledges the power that each person holds to shape their own story. The final lines "Watch yourself, easy does it, easy while you wait" bring the song full circle, reminding listeners to be patient and gentle in their pursuit of self-discovery.

Overall, "Easy Does It" is a comforting reminder that, even though the journey to self-discovery may be difficult, we hold the power to shape our own reality and must take things at our own pace.

Supertramp's first show in America was at the Virginia Beach Dome, Virginia.
All the advertising kept bragging "if you missed the Beatles when they first came to America, be sure NOT to miss Supertramp"
The place held about 1000 seats & the stage was set up just like this LP cover. Chair, umbrella and all exactly the same.
So they call this area "home" and when on tour they play here (Norfolk/Va Beach) and before returning to England, we get to see them again. The blokes have an amazing sound and advanced songs that are performed tight on cue.
Roger Hodgson can write songs that give meaning and he plays the keys magically~!
