The project of drummer and singer Nick Rattigan and guitarist Jacob Rubeck, Surf Curse formed in Reno in 2013, issuing their first album, Buds, later that June. An EP, Sad Boys, appeared in October, after which the band relocated to L.A., where they began to establish themselves in the city's vibrant underground scene. By 2017, they'd reemerged as part of the Danger Collective and released their second album, Nothing Yet. An update on the simplistic style of their debut, Surf Curse's sound began to soften somewhat as they explored new tones and slightly more complex song structures. This trend carried over to their third LP, 2019's Heaven Surrounds You, which was inspired by Rattigan and Rubeck's favorite cult movies.

Surf Curse Lyrics

Told me all your secrets
Runnin your fingers thru my hair
And you whispered
All your serious thoughts
To see if
I'd follow them along
That's always gonna follow me
Remember
When we went to Tahoe Lake
In the summer
The water wasn't tamed
And we sang every Pavement song we could
And your Malkmus was just so damn good
The song "Memory" by Surf Curse is a nostalgic track that speaks to the power of moments shared between two people. The opening lyrics "Loose lips, told me all your secrets" highlights the intimacy that exists between two people when they share their innermost thoughts and feelings. The imagery of "Running your fingers through my hair" suggests a sense of comfort and ease that comes with trusting another person with your deepest secrets.
The singer then claims "It's just a distant memory, That's always gonna follow me", emphasizing the lingering impact that these moments have had on their life, even if they are in the past. The song then takes a turn, with the singer recalling a specific memory of a trip to Tahoe Lake with their partner. The reference to singing Pavement songs and admiring their partner's Malkmus highlights the joy that can be found in shared experiences, and how those memories can persist even as time goes on.
Overall, "Memory" is a touching ode to the power of shared moments between two people, and how those experiences can stay with us for a lifetime.
