After taking a brief recording hiatus in the mid-1990s to start a family with her husband, songwriter Doug Crider, Bogguss returned to the country music scene to find that her charting power had already faded. Although she last appeared on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in 1999, Bogguss continues to record and perform around the country to a loyal following.
Her most recent recordings have ventured into swing and jazz variations of country. These albums really showcase the tremendous talent in her voice. Suzy is a true singer, and her voice has so much versatility.
In 2014, Suzy added an album of Merle Haggard songs entitled "Lucky". The country & western flavor dominates this album, unlike some of her other recent work. To promote this new album, Suzy has embarked on a nationwide tour.
Burning The Toast

Just a few old friends were there
And they knew that I loved you
When they choked the words "I do"
We found ourselves a two-room flat
Pots and pans and a pussycat
And we cuddle and we coo
And every morning I'm burning the toast for you
I'm only happy if I'm doing the most I can for you
The coffee's weak, but my love is strong
It's gotta last the whole day long
Till tomorrow morning when the sun comes shining through
And I start all over burning the toast for you
You're sitting in your flannel robe
Smiling as I light the stove
When you call me your sweet miss
I have to stop and steal a kiss
We're settled in our cozy nest
Someday, we swear, we'll get some rest
But as long as love stays true
I'll be burning the toast for you
And every morning I'm burning the toast for you
I'm only happy if I'm doing the most I can for you
The coffee's weak, but my love is strong
It's gotta last the whole day long
Till tomorrow morning when the sun comes shining through
And I start all over burning the toast
I start all over burning the toast for you
The song "Burning The Toast" by Suzy Bogguss tells the story of a couple starting their lives together after their small wedding ceremony. They share a love that is so strong that the singer finds joy in even the simplest of tasks, like burning toast for her partner every morning. The lyrics speak to the sacrifices and small gestures that define a truly loving relationship.
The line "And they knew that I loved you, when they choked the words 'I do'" is particularly poignant. It suggests that the couple's love was so palpable that it was almost difficult to speak the words out loud. The next stanza describes the simple joy of building a life together, no matter how humble their beginnings may be. The singer describes a light-heartedness to their relationship, cuddling and cooing like lovebirds.
In the final stanza, we see the couple settled into a cozy nest, with the promise of rest on the horizon. The singer makes it clear that as long as their love stays true, she will keep burning toast for her partner. This song celebrates the beauty in mundane tasks and the power of love in the everyday.
