Spinning Wheel
Sweat & Tears Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What goes up must come down
Spinnin' wheel got to go 'round
Talkin' 'bout your troubles it's a cryin' sin
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel spin

You got no money and you got no home
Spinnin' wheel all alone
Talkin' 'bout your troubles and you, you never learn
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel turn

Did you find the directing sign on the
Straight and narrow highway
Would you mind a reflecting sign
Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colors that are real

Someone is waiting just for you
Spinnin' wheel, spinnin' true
Drop all your troubles by the riverside
Catch a painted pony on the spinning wheel ride

Someone is waiting just for you
Spinnin' wheel, spinnin' true

Drop all your troubles by the riverside
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel fly

Overall Meaning

The song "Spinning Wheel" by Blood, Sweat & Tears can be interpreted in various ways. However, at its core, it is about the cyclical nature of life, and how everyone goes through their respective ups and downs. The opening lines "What goes up must come down / Spinnin' wheel got to go 'round" highlight this cyclical nature of life where every high is followed by a low. In the first two verses, the song speaks about how people talk about their troubles but do nothing to change their situation. Instead, they keep spinning on the wheel of life, always in the same place, never learning from their mistakes.

The third verse talks about the need for signs in life- "Did you find the directing sign / On the straight and narrow highway / Would you mind a reflecting sign / Just let it shine within your mind / And show you the colors that are real." It's an acknowledgement that there must be guidance in life to show us the right path. The final verse talks about hope and waiting for someone to take you out of your troubles. Someone will be waiting for you to catch a painted pony on the spinning wheel ride.

Overall, "Spinning Wheel" is a song about the cyclical nature of life and how one must keep moving forward, even though life may keep spinning, taking us up and down. It encourages people to keep on going, to keep on pushing regardless of the situation they find themselves in.

I was 11 years old when this song came out. I'm 63 now, I survived colon cancer and Covid 19. When I will be gone, this song will still be carrying on and on and on. Great song, God knows how I miss the 60s and the 70s.

I know best the 80's and the 90's (born 1976) but clearly = I am with you about the 70's... 99% of my DVD's are 70's movies, and goes the same on music.... A good evening is one evening I can feel the 70's !

@ZeroGravity60

Congrats on beating colon cancer. I've been stage 4 cancer for just over 3-years but am feeling good for the most part. [I might beat it.] What would we do without YouTube, every hit from the past is at our fingertips. Peace brother.
