Spinning Wheel Blood
Sweat & Tears Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What goes up must come down
Spinnin' wheel got to go 'round
Talkin' 'bout your troubles it's a cryin' sin
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel spin

You got no money and you got no home
Spinnin' wheel all alone
Talkin' 'bout your troubles and you, you never learn
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel turn

Did you find the directing sign on the
Straight and narrow highway
Would you mind a reflecting sign
Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colors that are real

Someone is waiting just for you
Spinnin' wheel, spinnin' true
Drop all your troubles by the riverside
Catch a painted pony on the spinning wheel ride

Someone is waiting just for you
Spinnin' wheel, spinnin' true

Drop all your troubles by the riverside
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel fly

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Spinning Wheel by Blood, Sweat & Tears is a song that has a lot of metaphors and symbolism. The main theme of the song is the cyclical nature of life. The chorus, 'What goes up must come down, Spinning wheel got to go round' speaks about the inevitability of life's ups and downs. The use of 'spinning wheel' as a metaphor represents the ongoing cycle of life. The song advises the listener to ride it out and allow the wheel to spin.

The lyrics of the verses use the metaphor of a 'painted pony' to represent the distractions of life. People often turn to distractions during times of trouble and the 'painted pony' represents that. The chorus follows up with the advice to 'drop all your troubles by the riverside' and ride the 'spinning wheel'. This means to let life take its course and not worry too much about things you cannot control.

The line 'Did you find the directing sign on the straight and narrow highway' refers to the path people choose in life. When one is lost, it's easy to go astray and choose the wrong path, but if one keeps their eyes open, they will find signs to lead them back to the right path.

Overall, Spinning Wheel is a poignant song that encourages listeners to accept life's ups and downs and to enjoy the ride. It speaks about the cyclical nature of life and how we should embrace it.

I was 11 years old when this song came out. I'm 63 now, I survived colon cancer and Covid 19. When I will be gone, this song will still be carrying on and on and on. Great song, God knows how I miss the 60s and the 70s.

@ZeroGravity60

Congrats on beating colon cancer. I've been stage 4 cancer for just over 3-years but am feeling good for the most part. [I might beat it.] What would we do without YouTube, every hit from the past is at our fingertips. Peace brother.
