This Is Home
Switchfoot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got my memories
Always inside of me
But I can't go back
Back to how it was
I believe you now
I've come too far
No I can't go back
Back to how it was

Created for a place I've never known

This is home
Now I'm finally where I belong
Where I Belong
Yeah, this is home
I've been searching for a place of my own
Now I've found it
Maybe this is home
This is home

Belief over misery
I've seen the enemy
And I won't go back
Back to how it was
And I got my heart set on what happens next
I got my eyes wide it's not over yet
We are miracles and we're not alone

This is home
Now I'm finally where I belong
Where I Belong
Yeah, this is home
I've been searching for a place of my own
Now I've found it
Maybe this is home
This is home

And now after all my searching
After all my questions
I'm gonna call it home
I've got a brand new mindset
I can finally see the sunset
I'm gonna call it home

This is home
Now I'm finally where I belong
Where I Belong
Yeah, this is home
I've been searching for a place of my own
Now I've found it
Maybe this is home
This is home

Now I know
Yeah, this is home
I've come too far

And I won't go back
Yeah, this is home

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of This Is Home by Switchfoot speaks about the memories that the singer carry within him. Though he acknowledges the past, he cannot go back to how things were. He then states that he believes now and that he has come too far to go back to how things were. This probably suggests a positive change in his life that he does not want to reverse. He then describes himself as created for a place he has never known, indicating that he may feel like a stranger wherever he goes. However, he finds the place where he truly belongs, a place of his own, where he has been searching for so long. This newfound place is home, regardless of the fact that he has never known it before.

The second verse of the song speaks of his determination to move forward and not look back at the misery of his past. He believes that he has seen the enemy, and he will not go back to how things were. He also talks about his optimism about the future, and how he has his heart set on what happens next. He knows that they are not alone in this pursuit, and they are all miracles. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the newfound confidence and sense of belonging.

The third verse of the song speaks of his decision to make this newfound place home, and to let go of all his questions and searches. He expresses his feeling of being reborn, acknowledging how far he has come, and that he won't go back. Finally, the song ends with the realization that this is home, and he has come too far to go back to how things were.

This is a song I remember hearing a long time ago. It was on the soundtrack for Prince Caspian, a movie I love very much. I don't remember giving the song much thought as a teen, but I've followed Switchfoot's music for around 17 years now and spent much time thinking about their lyrics. In recent years, the song "Where I Belong" has grown more and more into an anthem for the life I live. Today I'm thinking about these two songs set side by side.
...

"Yes. This is home. I've been searching for a place of my own. Now I've found it. Now I'm finally where I belong."
and
"Still looking for a home in a world where I belong. And on that final day I die / I want to hold my head up high / I want to tell you that I tried / to live it like a song."
...
"This Is Home" feels like a song of arrival and completedness. "Where I Belong" is that song sung on the shores of Babylon, in exile. Yet, the songs are so tied to each other in their longing. It reminds me of the promise God spoke to Moses in Exodus: "I will certainly be with you, and this will be the sign to you that I am the one who sent you: when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will all worship God at this mountain." Hmm... ;)
Stay safe everyone. Keep trying. You got this.

@espariacreations

I do too, C.S. Lewis has said some of my favorite quotes. The one above really hits home though.

The Narnia books were, are, and always will be so much more than children's books.

This song breaks my heart on so many levels. From missing my dad, to broken relationships, to a falling out of a church leadership that I never felt apart of even when I heard this song. but now it brings hope that the "Church Body of christ" is the true church. It isn't restricted to a building. Or a policy. Or a rule. But only to God.
