The Metro
System of a Down Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm alone, sitting with my broken glass
My four walls follow me through my past
I was on a Paris train, I emerged in London rain
And you waiting there swimming through apologies

I remember searching for the perfect words
I was hoping you might change your mind
I remember the soldier standing next to me
Riding on the metro

I was smiling as you took my hand
Saw the moon we spoke in France
You were past the shallow words
Years have passed and still I hurt
You were past the shallow words
Years have passed and still I hurt
I can see you now, smiling as I pulled away
Sorry

I remember the letter wrinkled in my hand
"I love you always" filled my eyes
I remember the night we walked along the Seine
Riding on the metro

I remember a feeling coming over me
The soldier turned, then walked away

Fuck you for loving me
Riding on the metro

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to System of a Down's song "The Metro" focus on the singer's feelings of loneliness and hurt as they reflect on a past relationship. At the beginning of the song, the singer is alone, sitting with their broken glass, as their own memories and regrets follow them through their past. They recall being on a train from Paris to London, with "you" waiting for them on the other end, swimming through apologies. They continue reminiscing about searching for the perfect words to change "your" mind and about a soldier standing next to them as they rode on the metro.

Further into the song, the singer remembers smiling as "you" took their hand and saw the moon while speaking in France. However, despite these happy memories, they still hurt from the relationship even though they were past the shallow words. The singer then recalls pulling away from "you" and seeing "you" smile, feeling sorry. They further reminisce about a letter they received with "I love you always" written on it, their night walking along the Seine, and a feeling coming over them when the soldier turned and walked away. The song ends with the singer exclaiming "fuck you for loving me" as they ride on the metro.

Overall, the lyrics in "The Metro" showcase the pain, regret, and longing felt by someone looking back at a past relationship. The singer feels haunted by memories of "you" and their time together, while also being unable to move on from the hurt they caused each other.

The Chorus is so punk rock while the rest is straight up metal. I love it

Coming back to this a year later, my opinion on it has changed a bit. I definitely see more than just metal and punk in this song. That’s the joy of System of a Down, always experimenting with genres ❤️

Agreed, kinda reminds me of that punk song Static X did. I can’t remember the name of it but Wayne says “1234,1234!” really fast lol
