THE ALFEE is a popular Japanese musical group comprised of Masaru Sakurai (… Read Full Bio ↴THE ALFEE is a popular Japanese musical group comprised of Masaru Sakurai (桜井賢 Sakurai Masaru) (voice, bass guitar, born January 20, 1955), Kōnosuke Sakazaki (坂崎幸之助 Sakazaki Kōnosuke) (voice, acoustic guitar, percussion, born April 15, 1954) and Toshihiko Takamizawa (高見沢俊彦 Takamizawa Toshihiko) (voice, electric guitar, born April 17, 1954). The group was formed with four members in 1973 after they met on the campus of Meiji Gakuin University. The fourth member, Yasuo Miyake (三宅康夫 Miyake Yasuo), left the band shortly after it formed (sometime between 1975 and 1979 based on the album covers and information on THE ALFEE's official site).

They released their debut single on August 25, 1974. In 2003, HMV Records Japan rated them #92 in their "Top 100 Japanese pops Artists".

Overall Meaning

The opening of THE ALFEE's song "Dark Side Meditation" talks about the beginning of an uneasy day where words lose their meaning in the twists and turns of the maze. The singer wants their loved one to be by their side more than anyone else as someone has just hit the door to intoxication. In the first verse, there is the notion of the crashing out of the "labyrinth of despair," with the loss of reason and intellect from flashbacks of another time. The chorus then echoes a desire to be held close by their loved one and self-transformation by opening the heart's door.

The second verse talks about the singer's weariness with the illusory mirage of the city making their heart tired with the damper of the burning sun. The poet in them wants to hear the voice of their loved one and wants them to open the door to losing oneself. The bridge talks about a day that ends without anything, leading to the night where sighing guides them. They want to be held by the loved one and dive deep into a wet dream with intense kindness, leading to self-transformation.
