Cemetery Gates
TYR Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Crucified for no sins
An image beneath me
Whats within our plans for life
It all seems so unreal
I'm a man cut in half in this world
Left in my misery...
Without a tear in his eyes
It's nothing new for him to see
I didn't ask him why
I will remember
The love our souls had
Sworn to make
Now I watch the falling rain
All my mind can see
Now is your (face)
Well I guess
You took my youth
I gave it all away
Like the birth of a
New-found joy
This love would end in rage
And when she died
I couldn't cry
The pride within my soul
You left me incomplete
Memories now unfold.
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the
Cemetery gates
Sometimes when I'm alone
I wonder aloud
If you're watching over me
Some place far abound
I must reverse my life
I can't live in the past
Then set my soul free
Belong to me at last
Through all those
Complex years
I thought I was alone
I didn't care to look around
And make this world my own
And when she died
I should've cried and spared myself some pain...
Left me incomplete
All alone as the memories still remain
The way we were
The chance to save my soul
And my concern is now in vain
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the cemetery gates
The lyrics to Týr's song Cemetery Gates present a reflection on life and death, and the search for meaning in the face of tragedy. The song centers around a dialogue between the singer and a reverend, who seems to offer little comfort or explanation for the suffering in the world. The line "crucified for no sins" suggests a sense of injustice, while the image of a man "cut in half" speaks to the feeling of being torn apart by grief and loss.
As the song progresses, the singer seems to come to terms with the past and contemplate a way forward. There is a sense of regret for the love that was lost and the mistakes that were made, but also a recognition that life must go on. The repeated refrain "believe the word, I will unlock my door and pass the cemetery gates" suggests a desire to move beyond the pain and find some kind of closure.
Overall, the song presents a poignant meditation on the human experience, grappling with themes of death, loss, and the search for redemption.

As a die-hard Pantera fan, I'm usually picky about another band covering one of their songs. I'm rather impressed. Tyr pulled it off really well.

@Gorrazin Ok buddy, true, but great music is not for everyone so it's usual for a band of unexperienced enthusiasts to do not a goot job when trying to cover great bands like PanterA. But I personally appreciate them covering: for me it's like other people that tell me "hey I love PanterA, too!"...If you could hear me singing one of their songs you should find out that I suck, but this anyway means I love them, not that I wanna spit on their art!
(Far Beyond Driven is for sure my favourite album from Darrell & Co.)

@Antonio C I'm kind of picky too when I comes to covers too. It's just if a cover is done "badly" it feels like the cover band is spitting in my face. Btw I'm personally like Pantera's first album. Cowboys from Hell is good tho.

You're a die-hard fan like me, so why you usually picky about people who pays respect to PanterA? Even if the covering band sucks it does not mean they must not scream to the world they love the Cowboys From Hell, don't you think??
It's A Psycho Ricky Freakout!
The best cover of a Pantera song ever.

I agree. In fact, I think this is better than the original. I know, I can't believe the blasphemy. Vocalist is just better, that is why I think this cover is better.
