Taco was born to a Dutch couple in Jakarta (On a side note, Indonesia was once a Dutch colony). Prior to his worldwide hit with Puttin' on the Ritz, he fronted a Berlin-based band called Taco's Bizz. Their niche was performing Depression-era oldies in a more contemporary style, and soon Taco was courted by record labels to release a solo single. Puttin' on the Ritz gained so much attention that an entire album was funded by RCA Records. Both the album and the single were hits in Europe, and thanks to a popular MTV video for Puttin' on the Ritz, the single and the album became hits in America as well, selling over 500,000 copies of Taco's 1982 debut album After Eight.
A follow-up album, Let's Face The Music, was recorded in 1984 for RCA, but it failed to recreate Taco's initial success, and he vanished from the American market immediately thereafter. Taco continued to record, however, focusing mostly on the German market with albums Swing Classics/In The Mood Of Glenn Miller in 1985 and Tell Me That You Like It in 1986 for Polydor. In 1987 he recorded the self-titled album Taco. In 1989 he briefly flirted with contemporary dance music by releasing a pair of singles, Love Touch and Got To Be Your Lover, that were blatantly styled after the high energy disco sound popularized by Stock Aitken Waterman. Afterwards he repositioned himself as a swing/soul singer. He has collaborated with Geff Harrison of Kin Ping Meh fame.
He currently resides in Germany, occasionally performing in Berlin and recording.
He has been referenced on the TV show The Simpsons. Episode BABF19, "Behind the Laughter", features Willie Nelson saying, "Thank you, Taco, for that loving tribute to Falco", as well as the end of the tribute itself. Recently, Taco was referenced in an episode of The Venture Bros. in describing Klaus Nomi's tuxedo attire.

The curtain's up, the band begins to play
The mayor's there, his lovely wife's been
Squeezed into the fashions of the day
You make your entrance on time
Decadent, thrilling, divine
You're hypnotic, so exotic
Encore, show us more
Sweet Gipsy Rose-a
Encore, they shout more
Se magnifica
Such a pretty face
Than of you boding into space
So give them more, encore
Tre magnifica
Twelve o'clock, the stage is bare
The curtain's down, the show comes to an end
Waiting in the wings, I see the silhouette of him
Your current friend
Without me, your show wouldn't be
Professional right down to a 'T'
Yes, I'm the one who pulls the curtain down
Yes, I'm the one you'll never see
Encore, show them more
Sweet Gipsy Rose-a
Encore, they shout more
Se magnifica
Such a pretty face
Will send me flying into space
So give them more, encore
Tre magnifica
Without me, your show wouldn't be
Professional right down to a 'T'
Yes, I'm the one who pulls the curtain down
Yes, I'm the one you'll never see
Encore, show them more
Sweet Gipsy Rose-a
Encore, they shout more
Se magnifica
Such a pretty face
Has got me flying up in space
So give us more, encore
Tre magnifica
In Taco's song "Encore," he paints the picture of a glamorous stage show where the singer, Sweet Gipsy Rose, is the star. As the show begins at 8 pm, the audience eagerly anticipates her arrival. She appears on stage on time and performs with such hypnotic and exotic grace that the crowd is smitten. They shout "Encore" and beg for more of her performance. The mayor and his wife are also present, all dressed up in the latest fashion trends.
As the end of the show approaches, the curtain comes down, and the stage is bare except for a silhouette of Sweet Gipsy Rose's current friend, who is waiting in the wings. Taco reveals that he is the one who pulls the curtain down, and the one who the audience will never see. Without him, the show wouldn't be professional right down to a 'T.' He too is singing along with the audience, knowing that the hero of the song, Sweet Gipsy Rose, is the sole reason behind the show's success.
Taco's "Encore" is all about entertaining the masses while the lead performer showcases her talents. The catchy tune is an ode to the glamour and drama of stage shows, where the audience fades away in the euphoria of the performance. The song's lyrics have an addictive quality to them, and the upbeat tempo resonates with the electric atmosphere of a live stage show.
