Endors Toi
Tame Impala Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning
I look down at my feet
It's a hypnotist's arm
And it works like a charm
But I won't be deprived
Real world, surreal life
Do or die
There is time
Go to sleep
You'll be fine
In the morning you'll find
Real life was such a grind
Off I go, day is done
Where a new one's just begun
The lyrics to Tame Impala's "Endors Toi" convey a sense of surrender to the hypnotic and surrealistic effects of modern life. The first lines "Soothing repeat, I look down at my feet, it's a hypnotist's arm, and it works like a charm" describe a feeling of being lured into a trance-like state by the repetition and monotony of everyday life. This image of a hypnotist's arm working like a charm is a metaphor for the seductive power of routine, which can only be broken by a conscious decision to resist.
The following lines "But I won't be deprived, real world, surreal life, do or die, there is time, go to sleep, you'll be fine" suggest that the speaker is aware of the dangers of being lulled into complacency, but is also aware of the importance of finding a balance between what is real and what is surreal. The phrase "real world, surreal life" seems to encapsulate this balance, suggesting that there is a merging of the two worlds that can be both daunting and liberating. The last couple of lines "In the morning you'll find, real life was such a grind, off I go, day is done, where a new one's just begun" describes a cycle of daily life. The speaker seems to take the mundanity of daily routine in stride, accepting that there will always be another new day.
Overall, "Endors Toi" is a reflective song that speaks to the struggle of maintaining a sense of purpose and self-awareness in the face of the monotonous rhythms of modern life.
